General Description:

The Krieger School of Arts and Sciences (KSAS) seeks a major gift officer to join our team in achieving our annual, major, and planned giving program objectives. The Associate Director of Development is an integral member of the School’s External Affairs team in our effort to secure philanthropic support for the Krieger School to pursue its mission of education, research, and discovery. Our team is dedicated to connecting the passions of our donors to the needs of the School to realize our mission.

The Associate Director of Development will be responsible for identifying and cultivating relationships with prospective major and planned giving donors. This involves prospect research and developing effective solicitation strategies as well as stewarding donors throughout the major giving process. The Associate Director of Development will maintain a donor portfolio with a focus on gifts of $100,000 and above. The position will be focused on a designated territory within the United States.

Priority Duties:

  • Identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward a major gift prospect pool of alumni and other key constituents in the U.S. for major and planned gifts.
  • Develop annual fundraising goals and objectives in consultation with KSAS leadership; create a development plan to research and identify new prospects, make discovery calls, and build a prospect pool based on new prospects and past donors.
  • Plan and execute solicitation strategies leading to annual and major gifts. Travel extensively throughout the territory to pursue these strategies and build enduring relationships, completing at least 150 visits per year.
  • Prepare proposals, solicitation letters, gift agreements, and other development materials for prospects and donors that articulate Johns Hopkins University’s needs, values, and ambitions.
  • Communicate with major prospects and donors about specific ways to give, both current and deferred, to maximize gift and tax benefits.
  • Build and manage portfolio of 100-150 prospects with the capacity to make major and/or planned gifts.
  • Build a strong network of collegial partnerships with development and departmental representatives in areas across the institution.
  • Partner with the KSAS constituent engagement team to ensure event attendance in assigned territory, as well as recruit and support key volunteers who could assist in the School’s advancement efforts (i.e. mentoring, panel presentation, lectures, etc…). Attend events when needed.
  • Serve as liaison with selected academic departments, centers and programs. Work with the chair or director to determine fundraising opportunities for the department, center, or program. Develop excellent relations with faculty leaders and department chairs in support of KSAS priorities.
  • Seek and participate in opportunities to raise the profile of the School.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Three years related experience with at least one year of professional experience required.
  • Ability to work in an environment that puts a strong emphasis on metrics and success.
  • Ability to work independently; ability to work as a part of a team; manage projects; determine priorities; and maintain a high degree of professionalism and confidentiality.
  • Comfortable working in a complex, multi-divisional, and fast-paced organization.
  • Excellent interpersonal and oral communication skills; demonstrated effective writing and editorial skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously.
  • Ability and willingness to travel frequently. Current specific territory includes CA, CO, and TX with additional travel when needed.
  • Strong computer literacy skills and the ability to learn new software.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and be able to travel.
  • Must live within commuting distance to the Homewood campus in Baltimore and able to work on-campus 3+ days per week and remotely, effectively balancing the time.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
