Job Description

The Department of Management in the Pamplin College of Business at Virginia Tech invites applications for a Collegiate Professor of Technology Entrepreneurship position with demonstrated research and teaching expertise in technology entrepreneurship and/or innovation management. This is an open-rank (assistant, associate, full), academic year (9-month), position. A candidate's experience and credentials will be the basis for the determination of the rank of appointment. The faculty member is expected to teach courses related to entrepreneurship and innovation, project management, data analytics, technology management, and related areas. This is a non-tenure track position and not intended for tenure transfer, but advancement in rank is achievable, and multi-year contracts, ranging from three to seven years, are available. The Collegiate Professor will be expected to teach between 12-18 credit hours per year, depending upon one’s research portfolio and service-related work. The Collegiate Professor is expected to publish journal articles, cases, book chapters, and practice-focused articles in peer-reviewed outlets including high-quality academic, pedagogy-focused, and/or practice-oriented outlets. We are seeking candidates who through their research, teaching, and/or service can contribute to the diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging efforts of the Pamplin College of Business community.

Virginia Tech's 2021 #25 ranking in the Princeton Review's top undergraduate programs in entrepreneurship underscores the rapid growth of the Department of Management’s education, research, and engagement programs in entrepreneurship. Entrepreneurship is one of the three concentration options within the undergraduate program in Management. The Department also has a cross-campus, interdisciplinary Minor in Entrepreneurship and New Venture Growth. Graduate programs include graduate courses and certificates in digital entrepreneurship and innovation, artificial intelligence, and technology strategy in the Master of Information Technology (https://vtmit.vt.edu) program and in the Online, Professional, and Executive MBA Programs (https://mba.vt.edu).

The Department of Management has world-class faculty who conduct research in entrepreneurship, technology strategy, and innovation management. Virginia Tech recently won the top award at the Global Consortium of Entrepreneurship Centers for exceptional contributions in entrepreneurship research. The Department of Management consists of 30 full-time faculty members with an impressive range of research and teaching expertise across core sub-areas in the field of management.

The Collegiate Professor of Technology Entrepreneurship will interact closely with other members of the transdisciplinary Stakeholder Committee on Creativity and Innovation of Virginia Tech. Creativity and Innovation (C&I) is one of the transdisciplinary areas of focus within the Virginia Tech Destination Areas designed to enhance cross-disciplinary research and teaching relating to complex problems that impact the human condition.

Part of the mission of the C&I focus area is to build and strengthen creative communities, support economic development, and enhance the quality of life through self-sustaining and entrepreneurial activities. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to engage in transdisciplinary research, curriculum, and/or outreach initiatives with other university faculty working in the C&I Destination Area.

The position will be based on the Blacksburg campus, which is located near the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Appalachian Trail. Blacksburg's beauty and temperate climate is attractive to many. Required Qualifications

Candidates should have (1) Ph.D. degree in Business or in a STEM-related field with proven work experience in technology entrepreneurship and/or innovation management; (2) Experience in teaching entrepreneurship, technology management, innovation, or related areas; (3) Evidence of research in entrepreneurship, innovation, creativity, technology management, or related areas; (4) the ability to contribute in meaningful ways to the diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging efforts of the college and university.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred candidates will have: (1) Demonstrated background in technology entrepreneurship/management with a focus in artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, blockchain, biomedical engineering and/or translational medicine, commercial space exploration and/or transportation, or other leading-edge technical fields is strongly preferred; (2) Demonstrated success in teaching at college/university level in entrepreneurship, creativity, and/or technology and innovation management; (3) Demonstrated success in publishing research on technology entrepreneurship and/or innovation management in both academic peer-reviewed journals and practice-oriented outlets; (4) Experience in managing technology-based startups in new, corporate, or public sector ventures; (5) Experience in interdisciplinary teaching and/or research in areas that align with Virginia Tech's university-wide, multidisciplinary focus on creativity and innovation.
