Cooper Medical School of Rowan University (CMSRU) Library, located in Camden, NJ seeks creative and dynamic candidates for the position of Clinical and Reference Librarian. This position will provide medical reference and research support to all library users. In addition, they will collaborate with fellow faculty librarians and library staff to provide training, instruction, and technical support for the CMSRU Library’s electronic resources.

The library plays a central role in supporting the academic, research, and clinical enterprises of Cooper University Hospital and CMSRU, as well as its individual students, residents, faculty members, and staff. The library staff works closely with the Campbell Library at Rowan University and the Rowan School of Osteopathic Medicine Health Sciences Library colleagues on services and collections.

The successful candidate will have demonstrated the ability to work in a complex, changing environment; a proven capacity to work effectively in teams and building partnerships; and will be committed to engaging in scholarly activities and providing service to the University, the community, and the profession.

This full-time tenure-track AFT (American Federation of Teachers) librarian faculty position will report to the CMSRU Library Director. The successful candidate for this position will be hired at the rank of Librarian II (AFT Range 26) or Librarian III (AFT Range 22). Position Summary:

The primary focus of the Clinical Reference Librarian is to provide advanced research assistance for students, faculty, and staff, while exhibiting the ability to:

  • Conduct complex literature searches and compile information in support of patient care, medical/health sciences education, clinical research, and health administration best practices.
  • Participate in teaching about effective and productive use of available information resources and tools in a variety of formats and venues to the library's academic and clinical communities.
  • Lead library-based components of major projects that support the mission of CMSRU and its teaching hospital, Cooper University Hospital, examples include the compilation of CMSRU/Cooper Author Publication Reports and Departmental Process Improvement projects.
  • Design, deliver and promote, customized consultation services in response to evolving healthcare and information delivery trends, both in-person and virtually.
  • Serve as primary librarian on Cooper University Hospital committees and participate on committees at CMSRU and Rowan University
  • Contribute to professional Library organizations both locally and nationally


Required Qualifications

  • A Master degree in Library Science (MLS or MLIS) from a library school accredited by the American Library Association (or ALA-recognized foreign equivalent)
  • Experience in a healthcare and/or academic health sciences environment
  • 3+ years of professional librarian and instructional experience
  • Expertise with health sciences library resources and biomedical information systems, such as PubMed, CINAHL, Embase and Scopus
  • Experience in developing and presenting educational sessions and the ability to effectively teach adults using a variety of educational technologies
  • Demonstrated initiative and ability to work in a fast-paced clinical environment, both independently and collegially
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills; evidence of ability to communicate effectively with a wide variety of stakeholders
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills

Preferred Requirements

  • Experience with LibGuides, LibChat, LibAnswers Springshare software.
  • Familiarity with computer systems, library tools, software, standards, and digital collections.
  • Experience in using, training and supporting citation management software (eg. EndNote, RefWorks etc.)
  • Knowledge of the concepts of Information Literacy, including an understanding of Evidence Based Practice (EBP)
  • Familiarity with the use of emerging technologies in educational settings with the ability to acquire new technological skills and resolve problems in a resourceful and timely manner.
  • Record of professional activities including research and/or engagement in professional organizations.
