Position Summary:

The Department of Surgery at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health seeks a dynamic and innovative colon and rectal surgeon to lead the Division of Colon and Rectal Surgery. The Department of Surgery consists of more than 140 faculty across eleven specialty Divisions, performing more than 25,000 operations annually. The Department also trains more than 70 residents and fellows and is consistently ranked amongst the top surgery programs with extramural research funding.

The Division Chair will lead and direct successful clinical, education, and research programs that span the breadth of the field. As both the primary providers of colon and rectal Surgery care locally, as well as a large regional tertiary referral program, the 8 faculty in the Division provide clinical expertise in the full breadth of colon and rectal surgery, including colorectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, benign abdominal colon conditions, anorectal disease, endoscopy, and minimally invasive techniques. The Division leads and participates in multidisciplinary programs in inflammatory bowel disease and rectal cancer in conjunction with colleagues from gastroenterology, medical oncology, radiation oncology, radiology, and pathology. The faculty currently provide service in five unique sites: The UW Health University Hospital, the adjoining William S. Middleton VA Hospital, The American Center hospital, Unity Point Meriter Hospital and the outpatient Digestive Health Center. Education within the Division includes a commitment to medical student education and curriculum, and the Division plays a central role in the clinical and academic training of our general surgery residents, and supports an ACGME-accredited colon and rectal surgery fellowship. The Division has multiple clinical outcomes/health services research programs and a basic laboratory research program supported by federal extramural funding.

The Chair will provide direction, vision, oversight, development and accountability across the full range of the academic mission, and partners with colleagues across the School of Medicine and Public Health, UW Health, and the broader health system.

Principal Duties:

The selected Division Chair will be an accomplished colon and rectal surgeon with demonstrated success in developing clinical and academic programs. The Division Chair will be responsible for developing effective relationships with clinical and administrative leaders locally and on a system level to accomplish the goals and objectives of the Division of Colon and Rectal Surgery, Department of Surgery, and School of Medicine and Public Health. Duty allocations are approximate, and may vary based on final candidate, but would be estimated to include 40% clinical, 10% research and 50% administrative.

Clinical, Research and Education Activity - The successful applicant must have a demonstrated record of successful clinical practice as well as excellence in research and education, and be able to demonstrate the capacity to further grow and enhance the research and educational missions of the Division. Clinical activities will correlate with the incumbent's surgical specialty. The chairperson will participate in training of medical students, residents, and fellows, and will be expected to provide high quality care to the patients of UW Health.

Management and Leadership - The selected Division Chair will be responsible for managing and leading the Division, which will include working with faculty and staff to leverage their strengths, developing and enhancing Division-wide academic initiatives, empowering individuals to contribute to the mission of the health system, identifying and implementing ways to ensure a cohesive and collaborative culture, and promoting engagement with Department strategic initiatives. The Colon and Rectal Surgery Chair will report to the Chair of the Department of Surgery.

Clinical Program and Faculty Development - Ideal candidates will possess a record of creating and enhancing clinical programs and service lines, aligning clinical care pathways across multiple care locations, maintaining a track record of responsible fiscal oversight, and establishing collaborative relationships with administrators and physicians.

Degree and Area of Specialization:

MD, DO or equivalent is required.

Minimum Years and Type of Relevant Work Experience:

Applicants should have a history of successful clinical program development and a demonstrated track record of scholarship and education. Candidates must possess clinical and academic credentials sufficient for appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor. Appointment as Associate Professor or full Professor will require that candidate's credentials meet criteria for rank established by the School of Medicine and Public Health and UW-Madison guidelines.

License or Certificate:

Specialization must include current certification by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery.

Candidate is required to have, or be eligible for, a Wisconsin Medical License and must be eligible for enrollment as a billing provider and for all necessary hospital privileges within the UW Health network.
