Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The mission of the Abrons Student Health Center ( SHC ) is to provide student centered affordable, quality health and preventive services to the student of UNCW . The SHC provides comprehensive medical services, a retail pharmacy, health education and interview services. The SHC staff work collaboratively to best help students stay health and make health decisions while at UNCW . As a part of the SHC, the Hundley Health Education Center serves as the campus resource for information on a variety of health and wellness topics, including alcohol and other drugs, nutrition, sexual health, sleep, and stress. They provide services and educational programming to increase students’ knowledge and commitment to personal health and well-being. The office also provides educational programs for the campus conduct system, and coordinates the collegiate recovery community.

Brief Summary of Work for this Position
The Psychiatric Physician Assistant functions as member of a clinical team in the provision of health care in a fast- paced college health center. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to obtaining extensive medical and psychiatric histories, assessing, diagnosing, and treating acute illness and those elements of primary medical care that are reasonable within the constraints of the nature of student health and the individual’s certification; providing psychiatric and medication evaluation for students; prescribing the appropriate therapies including medication; providing on-going medication monitoring, consulting with Counseling Center and Student Health Center staff regarding patient and client care; ordering and interpreting appropriate diagnostic tests including laboratory and radiologic tests; assisting with emergencies; documenting all pertinent data in patient’s electronic medical record; referring clients to physicians/specialist and/or other community resources as appropriate; and providing a holistic approach to patient care, including provision of patient education as appropriate.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Licensed as a Registered Nurse by the North Carolina Board of Nursing, completion of a Nurse Practitioner program approved by the North Carolina Joint Subcommittee of the Board of Nursing and Board of Medical Examiners, and “approved to practice medical acts” by the Joint Subcommittee

Preferred education, professional skills and experience
- Previous work experience as a Physician Assistant in a college/university setting preferred
- Previous experience working with patients 17 – 30 years old is
preferred
- Must have the ability to effectively communicate with patients,
families, colleagues, and on- and off-campus partners
Required Certifications or licensure
- Licensed as Physician Assistant in the state of NC by time of
hire Certificate of Added Qualifications ( CAQ ) in Psychiatry at
the time of hire or be eligible to complete within twelve months of
hire
- Graduation and or completion of an educational program for
Physician Assistants accredited by the Commission on Accreditation
of Allied Health Education Programs and an active Physician
Assistant License issued by the North Carolina Board of Medical
Examiners
- Must have a Certificate of Added Qualifications ( CAQ ) in
Psychiatry at the time of hire or within twelve months of the date
of hire
- Current CPR certification required by time of hire
