A postdoc position for spinal cord injury (SCI) projects is available in the laboratory of Dr. Christine Schmidt, who is the Chair of the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Florida (UF). This position is for an initial one-year appointment (starting no later than January 2022) but has the potential to be renewed for an additional two years. Dr. Schmidt has a long history of training professionals who have entered and succeeded in academic positions.

Dr. Schmidt’s research focuses on engineering novel materials and therapeutic systems to stimulate tissue repair, with a particular focus on the repair and regeneration of peripheral nerve and spinal cord tissue ( http://www.bme.ufl.edu/labs/schmidt ). This position will be focused on engineered biomaterials and delivery techniques for regeneration after SCI.

Research Training and Responsibilities : (1) Conducting and developing research related to tissue engineering and materials science for SCI applications. Compiling and analyzing data. Writing reports and manuscripts and discussing/presenting results. (2) Mentoring graduate students and/or undergraduate students as needed for the project. (3) Participation in writing grant proposals and creating progress reports. (4) Working with Dr. Schmidt and her research leadership team (Research Coordinator and other Postdocs) to help provide technical and strategic oversight of lab projects and research direction.

Professional Development Opportunities : The selected candidate will have access to a wide variety of professional development activities at the University of Florida. He/she can participate in a 14 weeklong course on Grant Writing for Biomedical Sciences course. Furthermore, the University of Florida Center for Translation Science Institute runs an annual Mentor Academy consisting of a series of monthly lectures to help postdocs and faculty develop into successful mentors. Postdoctoral seminars and career development seminars are put on by both the Office of Postdoctoral Affairs and the Career Resource Center at the University of Florida. These seminars will enable the selected candidate to learn critical skills for navigating the academic career path. Previous seminars included: The Academic Job Search, Developing a Teaching and Research Statement, The Academic Interview, Keys to Successful Grant Writing, and Team-Based Learning: An Exciting & Interactive Alternative to Lecture-Based Teaching.

Attributes of UF and Gainesville : The BME Department is located in health sciences at UF and is steps from engineering. The University of Florida is one of only a few comprehensive universities, having medical, veterinary, dental, nursing, public health, and engineering disciplines all co-localized on the same, contiguous campus. UF is a highly collaborative environment that provides researchers with many opportunities for learning (e.g., top seminar programs, excellent core research facilities) and research collaborations. Gainesville is located in the northern region of Florida, within 1-1.5 hours of each coast, and just 1.5-2 hours to Orlando and Tampa. Minimum Qualifications : Applicants must have a Ph.D. in a related biomedical engineering/science area with strong cell culture and animal surgical skills. Applicants must have experience with manuscript preparation and submission. Experience with grant writing and managing students is not required but is desired.

In vivo surgical skills and experience with histology and immunohistochemistry are required, and familiarity with spinal cord research and models is essential. Candidates should also have background training and experience in biomaterials/scaffold design, materials characterization, cell culture, microscopy, basic cell biology and immunocytochemistry assays, and in vitro assessment of cell-biomaterials interactions.
