Job Summary

Michigan Tech’s Division of Student Affairs is looking for an enthusiastic leader who will use a teamwork approach to provide strategic and culturally responsive leadership and administrative responsibilities for the Center for Student Mental Health & Well-being (CSMHW). As a director within the Division of Student Affairs, this position works collaboratively with other areas in Student Affairs and throughout campus to create and promote an inclusive and welcoming culture of well-being. The Center integrates clinical services with case management, prevention/promotion activities and third party telemental health services to offer a holistic approach that meets the needs of all students. The Director oversees all areas of mental health and well-being service to both undergraduate and graduate students and reports directly to the Associate Dean for Student Development.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership and management for department, including policy and program development and implementation.
  • Administer and coordinate the resources and activities of the CSMHW, including strategic planning, resource allocation, services, campus outreach, and evaluation.
  • Provide direct/indirect supervision and leadership for the assistant director, clinical staff, case manager, nurse practitioner, Student Health & Well-being staff, and administrative staff to monitor and ensure compliance with policies, procedures, and legal standards for ethical counseling and case management.
  • Conduct employee evaluations and performance reviews, as needed.
  • Maintain internal and external networks of consultation and referral to enhance the services.
  • Prepare CSMHW budget and write annual and ad hoc reports as required.
  • Schedule and share in the responsibility of “on-call” services to ensure 24-hour crisis/emergency response and effective and timely intervention.
  • Participate on appropriate university committees and provide education to the university community regarding issues such as eating disorders, grief counseling, depression, anxiety, and other mental health related topics.
  • Serve on the Early Intervention Team, the Scholastic Standards Committee, the ADA Committee, and other committees as assigned.
  • Provide leadership, supervision and consultation with partner universities to provide graduate student placements.
  • Hire and oversee any necessary contract positions, such as part-time or temporary counselors.
  • Ensure that all documentation of student records is kept in a confidential manner.
  • Seek, oversee/write grants and participate in revenue generation appropriate for the department.
  • Devote approximately 25% of time to maintaining clinical caseload of individual and group clients.
  • Participate in appropriate professional development activities to stay current in the field.
  • Perform additional duties related to position, divisional, and institutional needs.

Required Education, Certifications, Licensures (minimum requirements)

  • Master’s degree in psychology, counseling, social work or closely related field.
  • Licensed (or license eligible) as a mental health clinician in the state of Michigan at time of hire. If licensed in a state other than Michigan, must be license-eligible in Michigan at date of hire; and must obtain Michigan license within 6 months of start date.

Required Experience (minimum requirements)

  • Two to five years of clinical and direct supervisory experience in a counseling center.
  • Experience with crisis/risk management.
  • Experience effectively managing competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience with assessment and evaluation of services and data-driven decision making.

Desirable Education and/or Experience

  • Doctorate in psychology, counseling, social work or closely related field.
  • Experience in a leadership role within a university counseling center.
  • Two or more years of experience working in higher education.
  • Experience and philosophy compatible with a stepped care service model.
  • Experience utilizing brief therapy techniques.
  • Experience organizing and conducting group therapy.
  • Experience providing clinical and psychoeducational services to diverse populations, e.g. minority, LGBTQIA+, veteran, etc.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities (minimum requirements)

  • Demonstrated intercultural competence and commitment to enhancement and promotion of diversity and inclusion.
  • Demonstrated exemplary communication skills, including written, verbal and presentation skills.
  • Demonstrated teambuilding and conflict resolution skills.
  • Demonstrated willingness to work in emergency situations and occasionally on evenings and weekends.
  • Proficiency with word processing and spreadsheet software, preferably Microsoft Office or Google Suite.

Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities

  • Familiarity with Titanium or other EMR system.
