Job Summary
The Magnetized Plasma Research Laboratory ( MPRL ) in the Physics Department at Auburn University invites applications for an engineer associate position that will be available beginning in August 2021.
This job provides technical and organizational service for the Magnetized Plasma Research Laboratory in the Auburn University Physics Department. The primary tasks will focus on support of research operations for the Magnetized Dusty Plasma ( MDPX ) project – a federally-funded, shared user research facility for basic plasma science research. Additional responsibilities will include providing technical support and test and measurement support for for the various plasma experiments in the laboratory.
Essential Functions
Specific tasks will include: (1) Maintainance of mechanical and electrical hardware and equipment in the laboratory and will also build new equipment, as nceeded. (2) Support and operate hardware for high vacuum systems, develop electrical and mechanical components that will operate in high magnetic fields (up to 4 Tesla), build and maintain high-power electrical systems, and design electronic circuits; (3) Support and develop hardware-to-computer interfaces, e.g., using National Instruments LabView software. (4) Working very closely with undergraduate students, graduate students, post-doctoral researchers, and staff scientists in the laboratory and in the Physics Department. The technician will work with the group’s research scientist to oversee the general physical operation of the laboratory, making sure mechanical and vacuum supplies are available, ensuring that the laboratory is a safe working environment, and maintaning safety and maintenance records.
Because the laboratory operates as a shared user facility that regularly hosts external users, as successful candidate must have excellent written and interpersonal communication skills, must be able to flexibly work with deadlines, and must be able to work with a highly diverse team of individuals that will include domestic and international team members.

A candidate with extensive experience in mechanical assembly, electronic and electrical circuit assembly and debugging. Some experience with radio-frequency (RF) electronics and vacuum systems is also highly desirable.
