Director and (Associate) Professor, Dana School of Music

Major Work Characteristics/Summary of Position

Youngstown State University seeks an accomplished and visionary leader to serve as the next Director of the Dana School of Music within the Cliffe College of Creative Arts. The Director will be an inspiring and strategic professional with a record of effective administrative experience as well as significant achievements as a music faculty member and performer and/or scholar. The Director serves as the principal advocate for the School of Music within the college and in the community and will work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and students to advance the strategic direction of the school; advance the reputation of the school nationally and internationally; promote academic and musical excellence; support innovations in teaching, curricular design and degree offerings, research/creative activities, and faculty development; oversee the everyday functions of the school, its programs, and associated areas, including the YSU Youth Orchestra; further positive and productive relationships with alumni; formulate, coordinate, and support student recruitment initiatives in collaboration with the faculty; and engage in donor development and related advancement activities to support the school and its programs. Teaching responsibilities, while minimal, will be determined by the candidate’s academic background and skills. The Director is a 12-month administrative position with a faculty rank of Associate or Full Professor of Music with tenure, is appointed to a five-year, renewable term, and reports to the Dean of the Cliffe College of Creative Arts. The salary is negotiable and competitive.

Founded over 150 years ago, the Dana School of Music is one of the oldest institutions of its kind in the United States. The Dana School of Music is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music and offers a comprehensive listing of undergraduate Bachelor of Music degree programs as well as Bachelor of Arts options that provide additional breadth of study. Graduate students may earn a Master of Music degree in performance, music education, jazz, history and literature, and theory and composition. The Cliffe College of Creative Arts (CCCA) is a dynamic component of the Youngstown State University campus and is a major regional arts resource. Minimum Qualifications           

Earned Doctorate from an accredited institution in one of the School’s academic disciplines. Evidence of excellence in teaching, scholarship/creative activity, and service. Credentials appropriate for appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor of Music with tenure. Proven record of administrative leadership. Commitment to shared governance, educational equity, diversity, and inclusion within a university setting. Experience with curricular program development as well as varied formats, including online, distance, and/or hybrid. Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and management skills. Strong written and oral communication skills. Collaborative experience in community outreach and building relationships with diverse constituencies. Experience with external accreditation, including NASM. Ongoing engagement with the field, including familiarity with a broad range of historical and contemporary practices in pedagogy, scholarship, and artistry. An understanding of current issues and trends in higher education.


Preferred Qualifications

Record of fundraising and donor relations. Experience working within a collective bargaining environment.

Work Schedule 

Typically Monday through Friday, including some evenings, and the possibility of some weekend days.
