Department Summary

The Office of Services to Students with Disabilities (SSD) is committed to providing eligible students accommodations that ensure equal access to learning and equal opportunity for academic success. SSD also works with its student advisory board as well as CSUSB faculty and staff to raise campus-wide awareness of issues related to disability, accessibility, and equity.

Since 1978, CSUSB has experienced dynamic growth in its population of students with disabilities. At California State University, San Bernardino (CSUSB) there are over 1,000 students with verified disabilities served by the SSD office. SSD provides the necessary support services instrumental for the achievement of chosen academic goals. Services are critical to a student's success; therefore, needs are assessed on an individual basis. This highly personalized approach has enabled SSD to successfully help thousands of students achieve their chosen academic goals.


Job Summary

Under general supervision, the incumbent will coordinate alternative media production service provision. Ensure compliance with local/state/federal laws about production and distribution of alternative media and participation in the CSU Aimhub system as the campus "Power User", and Bookshare. Assess the need for and recommend policy and procedural changes based on best practices in the field. Maintain the alternative media database and spreadsheets. The incumbent will correspond with faculty regarding textbooks and instructional materials. Oversees the creation of application and adaptation of media forms, including Braille, e-Text, audio, large print, and tactile graphics to meet individual disabled student learning requirements using various software packages making it possible for students to receive their textbooks and instructional materials in an accessible format that they can comprehend. Maintains the department's alternative media library, assistive technology lending library, and website.

Employment Status: Full-time, "non-exempt", probationary position (with the possibility of converting to permanent).

Work Schedule
  • This position works Monday through Thursday 10:00 am - 7:00 pm, Fridays 8:00 am - 5:00 pm and some Saturdays may be required.
  • Summer Schedule Monday - Thursday 8:30 am - 7:00 pm.



Key Qualifications
  • Comprehensive and detailed knowledge of the university infrastructure, policies, and procedures.
  • Thorough mastery of English grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
  • Expertise in using office software packages, technology, and systems.
  • Ability to interpret and apply policies and procedures independently, and use judgment and discretion to act when precedents do not exist.
  • Ability to troubleshoot most office administration problems and respond to all inquiries and requests related to the work area.
  • Ability to understand problems from a broader perspective and anticipate the impact of office administration problems and solutions on other areas.
  • Ability to analyze operational and procedural problems and develop, recommend, and evaluate proposed solutions.
  • Ability to perform business math, analyze budgetary data, and make accurate projections requiring some inference.
  • Ability to effectively write and present own reports.
  • Ability to effectively handle interpersonal interactions at all levels and handle highly sensitive interpersonal situations.
  • Ability to use negotiation and persuasion skills to achieve results and expedite projects.
  • Knowledge of: Trends and developments in alternative media and assistive technology tools, equipment, and software available to address the specific needs of students in a college environment. Application and adaptation of media forms, including Braille, e-Text, audio, large print, and tactile graphics to meet individual disabled student learning requirements.
  • Advanced techniques, uses, and operations of computers, specialized equipment, and software to produce materials in alternative media formats. The Americans with Disabilities Act, Section 508, Web Content Accessibility Guidelines, and other local, state, and federal laws, regulations, and court decisions applicable to providing accommodations and support to faculty, staff, and students with disabilities. Advanced techniques, uses, and operations of equipment and software to produce captioning for videos and live streaming materials. Principles of learning and learning styles and limitations associated with various types of disabilities.
  • Principles and practices of sound business communication including English usage, grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
  • Design and operational characteristics of software packages and databases used to support student programs and associated programming and query languages such as SQL.
  • Principles of web design as required to advise on accessibility requirements and maintain the office website.
  • Modern office practices, procedures, and equipment including computers and applicable software programs.
  • Understanding of Copyright laws.



Education and Experience
  • These entry qualifications would normally be obtained through a high school program, technical/vocational program, or their equivalents combined with five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in general office clerical or secretarial work or the equivalent.
  • Entry to this classification requires a fully functional knowledge of and skill in standard office procedures and practices, as well as an ability to understand and operate in a variety of organizational structures.
  • Additionally, incumbents are expected to have a thorough knowledge of English grammar, spelling, and punctuation and be able to clearly communicate orally and in writing. Some positions may require a knowledge of business mathematics beyond basic arithmetic.
  • The ability to use and quickly learn new office support technology systems and software packages is also a prerequisite.



Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field.
  • Three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in making assessments and determining appropriate alternative media and assistive technologies to meet the needs of disabled students.
  • Experience in the use, maintenance, and customization of software applications supporting the management of programs for students with disabilities.



Salary

Anticipated Hiring Range: Minimum: $ 3,352.00 Maximum: $4,334.00 per month

Classification Salary Range: Minimum: $3,352.00 Maximum: $5,639.00 per month
