Web Specialist

Job Description Summary:
The Web Specialist supports the university's web development, maintenance, and digital communications efforts. Reporting directly to the Director of Digital Communications, this position plays a key role in La Verne's web presence through targeted updates, user experience improvements, maintaining back-end architecture, and providing constituent support through training and promoting digital campaigns.

Specific Duties:
  • Support the Manager of Web Development in creating new functionality for University of La Verne websites: build new page templates; support CSS development; coordinate on coding, and update projects.
  • Provide content support for University of La Verne websites: web maintenance requests; correct broken links/images and typographical errors, accessibility issues. Ensure that changes are made in compliance with university editorial and visual style.
  • Manage Google Custom Search Engine used by university websites: clean up bad links; promote various pages to greater prominence; and maintain results via best practices.
  • Oversee digital processes repository for Digital communications. Build and share technical guides for the campus community to use when familiarizing themselves with content maintenance.
  • Train administrative staff in the use of WordPress and LookingGlass (MyPortal) maintenance.
  • Research, recommend, and enact new and emerging technologies that boost the efficiency of Digital Communications, in general, and the Web Specialist, in particular. Attend training and conferences relevant to the job position.
  • Assist other units in the Office of Strategic Communications with execution of mass email campaigns and other digital communications intiatives, as needed.
  • Assist the Director of Digital Communications, as needed.
  • Be a culturally competent employee who attends/completes mandatory diversity and inclusivity trainings as provided by the university.


Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, computer science, or related field(s)
  • 2 years of experience in website development and maintenance
  • Experience with database management
  • Knowledge of Git (or similar) code repositories and VPN structures
  • Intermediate knowledge of Javascript, jQuery, CSS3, HTML5, XHTML, JSON, XML, REST API
  • Experience with WordPress development and maintenance
  • Ability to meet deadlines
  • Strong written and oral communications skills


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Command line knowledge of Linux/Unix servers (CLI)
  • WordPress CLI
  • Experience working with a comprehensive web hosting company like WP Engine or Pantheon
