Summary

The Michael E. DeBakey Department of Surgery, Abdominal Transplantation section is seeking a qualified HLA Technologist I full-time, with various shifts available (day, evening and night), to perform laboratory testing for the purpose of evaluating the immune status of transplant patient candidates before and after transplantation. This testing will lead to the matching of donor solid organs to transplant candidates on the kidney, heart, lung, liver and bone marrow waitlists for our various client hospitals. The selected HLA Technologist will be an enthusiastic, detail-oriented individual who demonstrates good laboratory techniques and works well in a team environment. Through performing laboratory experiments and following established clinical laboratory protocols, the technologist will help us understand the role of the immune system in solid organ and bone marrow transplantation. The results obtained from the technologist's wet-lab work will help guide clinical decision-making and make important discoveries in transplant immunology research that will be presented at national meetings. Candidates who complete their training can be board certified in Histocompatibility and participate in various laboratory committees with opportunities for leadership, research and teaching. They will be a vital part of our team to reach the laboratory’s education, research and clinical goals.

Job Duties
  • Performs various clinical lab tests, quality control, and maintenance procedures in the laboratory.
  • Performs/manages sample processing and maintains workflow.
  • Cleans and maintains Lab Bench and Computer Analysis workspaces.
  • Maintains patient records and results documentation.
  • Utilizes computer appropriately for entry of patient inquiry, specimen inquiry, test results, and quality control.
  • Performs reagent inventory, ordering, and quality control.
  • Attends continuing education programs and maintains current knowledge in the field.
  • Attends all mandatory programs on Universal Precautions, Disaster Plan, Electrical and Fire Safety, Chemical Hygiene Plan, Environment Safety, Biosafety and Hazard Communication Program.
  • Maintains compliance with wearing PPE and OHSA guidelines.
  • Participates in the laboratory’s on-call rotation (24/7) for the histocompatibility testing of all deceased donors.
  • Performs, understands, communicates, and complies with standards and conditions set by various governmental and accrediting agencies including CAP, CMS, ASHI and CLIA.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in a Biological Science or a related field. Four years of related experience may substitute for degree requirement.
  • No experience.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Prefer minimum of one year experience in any area of clinical laboratory medicine.
  • Exerts up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds constantly and/or a negligible amount constantly to move objects.
