Sheridan Libraries at Mt. Washington is seeking an individual for the role Head of Entrepreneurial Library Program who will manage and grow a complex library program that designs, develops and maintains custom virtual libraries, library instructional & research support services, private events programs, and other entrepreneurial programs for external organizations and individual clients.

Note: This is a remote position with office space available at the Sheridan Libraries location at Mt. Washington.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Establish financially sustainable services by seeking and developing institutional customers for services; design services with customers; and maintain close customer relationships at all levels (administration, faculty, and students).
  • Manage expertise to support new service development and effective and efficient service provision. Current service lines include management and ongoing development of tailored online libraries, information literacy instructional tools and consulting, library development consulting, and management of private events and filming arrangements in historic properties and museums. Provide support for other service lines that currently include library café services.
  • Hire, train and supervise staff to provide and manage services in areas of expertise as programs warrant. Cultivate team and individual professional development, particularly supervisors.
  • Hire consultants, as needed, to help identify, evaluate and develop new entrepreneurial opportunities.
  • Maintain a culture of continuous improvement, creating new services for current customers based on feedback and usage patterns, benchmarking services through comparison with other services and models, and developing new services for prospective customers. Ensure assessment and planning is integrated into all service lines.
  • Market and promote new and existing services.
  • Manage relationships at a strategic and contractual level with client organizations and key stakeholders in services.
  • Work to create partnerships with vendors and negotiate contracts for vendor services and support.
  • Work closely with peer managers and senior management within Sheridan Libraries to discuss services and promote department’s activities as a laboratory for new delivery models in user services, and/or partnership to explore ideas.
  • Prepare annual revenue and cost projections, monitor budgets and expenditures. Achieve annual profit targets which help fund the JHU’s libraries and museums.
  • Manage the preparation of all contracts including communications with JHU General Counsel.
  • Provide consultative support to colleagues on the development of financially sustainable services, as well as analysis of services of strategic interest to the library.
  • Serve on library- and university-wide committees.

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • Advanced degree or equivalent professional experience.
  • Minimum five-years’ experience in similar or related fields.
  • Demonstrated record of leadership, especially in the areas of inter- and intra-institutional collaboration.
  • Demonstrated entrepreneurial skills.
  • Strong service orientation and financial and operations management skills.
  • Ability to build efficient and responsive services.
  • Experience leading a complex library program or department.
  • Demonstrated ability to recruit, hire, and develop highly talented staff.
  • Ability to calculate and take risks.
  • Capacity to thrive in an environment of change and to foster that capacity in others.
  • Record of professional involvement, including speaking and publication. Experience providing library services in a distributed environment.
  • The Head, ELP must be flexible, creative, forward-thinking, self-motivated, innovative, proactive, and diplomatic, a consensus builder, a problem solver, and an exceptional listener.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • MBA/MPA preferred.

Starting Salary Range: ​​​​​​​$81,300 - $111,775 annually (commensurate with experience)

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
