Access Services Generalist

  • This is a full-time, 12-month, 35-hour week position. This position is responsible for ensuring that the SMJC Library provides outstanding customer service and circulation services to all library users and visitors. The incumbent will work with library staff to ensure that they are trained and able to maintain all essential Access Services functions, including the use of the OCLC library services platform, Interlibrary Loan operations, and Reserve procedures. This position is also responsible for monitoring building operations and the general supervision of part-time Access Services staff and student workers. Reports to the Director of Library Services.

    The anticipated schedule for this position is:

    Monday-Thursday: 10:30-6:30 p.m.

    Friday: 10-6 p.m.

    Must be flexible with evening & weekend hours as needed.

    Essential Functions:

  • The incumbent will strive to ensure high-quality customer service is provided to all library users and visitors.
  • Responsible for building operations and general supervision of part-time Access Services staff and student workers in the department.
  • Manage print and electronic Reserves.
  • Manage and coordinate Interlibrary Loan operations.
  • Responsible for training of library staff on opening/closing of library building procedures.
  • Responsible for training of library staff on essential department operations including use of OCLC Library Services Platform, Interlibrary Loan Operations, and Reserve Procedures.
  • Make independent judgments and decisions on a daily basis, following established guidelines, consulting with the Director of Library Services on issues not covered by established guidelines.
  • Coordinate library staff in doing all aspects of stack maintenance work to ensure timely shelving, reading of call numbers, shelf straightening, and other quality control measures as needed.
  • Assist library users with circulation inquiries including checking in/out of library materials and maintaining front desk operations.
  • Work with the Systems and Emerging Technologies Librarian to troubleshoot and communicate issues for all library equipment, including publicly accessible equipment, i.e., copiers, printers, microform readers.
  • Generate Access statistics as needed for us with library assessment.
  • Responsible for security of the building, staff, and library property.
  • Participate in the hiring and training of unit library staff assistants and student workers.
  • Integrate the core values of respect, integrity, compassion, justice and service in all aspects of interaction.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Library Services and Librarians.


Qualifications:

  • Minimum two (2) years college study. Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Two (2) years of customer service. Minimum one (1) year of supervisory experience. Previous library experience preferred.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Ability to interact professionally with diverse clientele.
  • Must have the flexibility to shift hours when needed to maintain library hours of operation, review aspects of library operations and/or train library staff.
  • Availability to work a flexible schedule that includes evenings and/or weekends when needed.
  • Building oversight experience preferred.
  • Excellent problem solving skills.
  • Excellent computer skills, proficient use of MS Word and Excel.
  • Experience using an Integrated Library System or a Library Services Platform required. Experience with OCLC WMS preferred.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, prioritize, and meet deadlines; strong organization skills, good time management skills, attention to detail, and able to work efficiently with frequent interruptions.
  • Ability to work independent of direct supervision and to work well with others in a team-based environment.
  • Ability to handle high-stress and emergency situations.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to lift 25 pounds and push/pull a 50 pound book truck. Also to bend and reach to low/high shelves, work standing/sitting for long periods.
  • Ability to maintain the highest degree of confidentiality.
