To further expand and deepen our school community's core values of excellence, antiracism, equity and social justice, the School of Education at American University seeks to add four (4) full-time faculty (non-tenure track) with expertise and experience in antiracist education across multiple programs. We seek to appoint 3 new faculty with expertise in antiracist practice related to education policy and leadership (1 faculty search in the EdD program; 2 faculty searches in the MEd program) and one faculty member with expertise in antiracist teaching and teacher preparation to serve as the Director of Undergraduate Teacher Education in SOE. All four of the new faculty must hold deep commitments and "practice-oriented" expertise in antiracist education in their respective fields. The SOE sees these four new antiracist faculty hires as a continued and growing commitment to furthering antiracist education across AU, in the local DC community, the nation, and decolonizing across the globe.

The below job description is specifically for the faculty position who will serve as a Director of Undergraduate Teacher Education and Senior Professorial Lecturer/Professorial Lecturer. The appointment is a 9-month, full-time term faculty position, with a summer administrative stipend, and will commence on August 31, 2021.

Undergraduate Teacher Education in SOE is committed to preparing teachers to work with students of all backgrounds. The program prepares teachers for either an Elementary Education or a Secondary Content Education (English, Social Studies, Math, or Science) setting in alignment with the respective District of Columbia’s Education Teaching Licenses. Key responsibilities of the Director of Undergraduate Teacher Education in SOE include:

  • Leading and administering the undergraduate teacher preparation programs (including the BA, minor in Ed Studies, minor in Special Education)
  • Coordinating programmatic decisions, as appropriate, with MAT Program Director
  • Supporting antiracist curriculum, pedagogy, and assessments across all Undergraduate Teacher Education Programs
  • Assisting in program assessment, program approval, and CAEP accreditation tasks
  • Hiring and supervising adjunct faculty
  • Managing student admissions
  • Providing leadership on marketing and recruitment plans
  • Developing and maintaining relationships with external partners
  • Supporting the advising and mentoring of program students
  • Convening undergraduate Teacher Education faculty to determine programmatic decisions and review candidate data
  • Serving as a content lead for one or more areas (e.g., Elem, Social Studies)


In addition to the Director responsibilities, the term faculty position holds a 6-course teaching load, with one release for program director duties. Term faculty responsibilities also include service, as appropriate, to the SOE and university community.

Applicants should hold a doctorate in education (general and/or special education) or another relevant field. Applicants’ experience and knowledge must include antiracist teacher education. Specifically, candidates should have historical and socio-political understandings of race and racism, ideologies of white supremacy, decolonization, and abolition within education A background in social studies and/or elementary education is preferred. Competitive candidates will demonstrate knowledge of and commitment to antiracist pedagogies, diversity, inclusion, and equitable outcomes for all students. Prior administrative and leadership experiences in higher education (or a related area) is also preferred.
