Job Summary

The University of Michigan-Flint is seeking an innovative and transformative leader to become our next School of Management Dean.  The School of Management (SOM) is the oldest professional school on the UM-Flint campus.  The Dean will collaborate with the faculty, staff, and students to articulate a shared vision as the School continues to advance in recruiting, mentoring, and retaining diverse students and faculty; promoting excellence in teaching, research, and engaged service among faculty and staff; expanding and enhancing the international education and partnerships; and developing external relationships and fundraising opportunities in support of the School’s programs, including partnerships and alliances with alumni and the business community to meet common goals.

Serving as the chief academic and administrative officer in the School of Management, the Dean will lead the School in advancing its core commitments, partnering with its stakeholders, and defining the future of the School’s programs and scholarship activity, education, practice, and service.  As part of the strategic vision for the future, the Dean will be responsible for a clear plan of advancing student recruitment, retention, and graduation success for the School.

As one of three campuses of the University of Michigan, UM-Flint is among the top-tier comprehensive public universities in the Midwest.  UM-Flint currently enrolls approximately 6,800 students and is home to high-caliber faculty and dedicated staff, and recently upgraded its Carnegie classification to Doctoral/Professional. Undergraduate and graduate degree programs are offered through our six schools/colleges.  The College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Innovation and Technology, the School of Education and Human Services, the College of Health Sciences, the School of Management, and the School of Nursing.  The University of Michigan-Flint offers degrees in 198 areas of study, including 74 graduate programs.  The combination of high-quality liberal arts and professional and graduate programs in an urban institution is unique and shapes the institution’s culture and opportunities.  With approximately 500 faculty and 440 staff, the University is advancing its mission in implementing a strategic plan that emphasizes stabilizing and regaining enrollment, improving student success and retention, the building of resources to support growth, and increased engagement of students and faculty in experimental learning, research, and interdisciplinary programs. 

The School of Management prepares students with engaged learning experiences to give them first-hand practice before entering the job market. Through team-based projects, lectures, assignments, case analyses and class discussions, the University of Michigan-Flint prepares our students to meet today’s challenges and shape tomorrow’s opportunities. The School enrolls nearly 700 undergraduate students, and 275 graduate students, offering bachelor and master degrees, dual degrees, certificates, and  several minors.  The School of Management is accredited by the Association of Advance Collegiate Schools of Business.  AACSB International accreditation represents the highest standard of achievement for business schools worldwide.   

Notable achievements include:

• In 2021, U.S. News ranked UM-Flint’s BBA program #1 in Michigan and top 20 in the country for online bachelor of business programs
• In 2020 and 2021, the part-time MBA program was recognized by the U.S. News & World Reports as “Best Graduate Business Programs”
• The Hagerman Center for Entrepreneurship & Innovation is the heart of entrepreneurship within the School of Management and on the University of Michigan-Flint campus.
• Entrepreneurs Society won national awards as the Most Outstanding Student Community Contribution Award, Best Networking and Cross Campus Innovation, and Global Chapter of the Year awards in 2017, 2019, and 2019 at the College Entrepreneurship Organization conference.
• The School’s Beta Alpha Psi honorary fraternity chapter received “Superior Chapter” status and a monetary award from KPMG in 2019.
• The UM-Flint Financial Management Association received top three honors at the case competition of the National Finance Leaders’ Conference in 2020.
• During 2016-2020, the Schools’ faculty had 61 articles in journals that are considered high quality by the Journal Citation Reports and discipline-specific listings.

Job Responsibilities:

The Dean reports to the Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and will have the following goals and responsibilities:

• Advance the vision, mission, and core values of the School of Management and UM-Flint
• Provide leadership for academic management that ensures efficient course offerings, effective program advising, high levels of student retention, and timely completion of degrees
• Mentor, promote, and advance research/scholarship and grant writing
• Build on and sustain strong partnership collaborations with the Flint community and with Flint educational and business partners who are committed to strengthening the community and growing leaders in our community
• Develop and enhance beneficial fundraising relationships with individuals, foundations, corporations, and local, state, and federal government agencies
• Develop and implement strategic plans for expansion by building on and enhancing existing programs and strengthen the curricula at both the undergraduate and graduate levels
• Collaborate with the executive officers of the University and other academic and clinical leaders to promote interprofessional, interdisciplinary, and inter-institutional partnerships
• Through the collaboration with multiple offices, including Office of Research and Economic Development and the University Advancement Development Office, cultivate and build external relationships and fund development opportunities for the School
• Regularly assess develop and improve all School programs
• Oversee and monitor all accreditation processes. Maintain accreditation standards and ensure that programs adhere to University, state, and federal regulations.
• Actively participate in community activities, increase the School’s visibility to its communities of interest, and represent the School at key meetings and conferences
• Develop, support, and maintain faculty, staff, student, and alumni relationships and partnerships
• Provide strong leadership, oversight, and guidance in all aspects of the School’s educational programs, research endeavors, community outreach, and service programs; encourage effective collaborative relationships; and foster excellence in teaching, research, and service
• Develop the curriculum and programs necessary to meet the needs of the community, students, and region
• Collaboratively partner with other deans to create innovative, interdisciplinary academic programs
• Participate in inter-professional development
• Commit to lifelong learning, student recruitment, retention, and success, while providing academic excellence in face-to-face and distance education.
• Foster an environment within the School of Management that supports creativity, innovation, inclusivity, and scholarly productivity that reflects the University of Michigan’s tradition of excellence in a regional campus.

Qualifications

Qualifications include an earned doctorate in a business or related field from an accredited institution; academic and experiential qualifications to accomplish the mission, goals, and expected program outcomes for the School; a distinguished record of innovative and transformative academic leadership and accomplishment in teaching, scholarship, and service at the college or university level.  Candidates must possess a record as a teacher and scholar commensurate with a tenured appointment at the rank of full professor in the School of Management at UM-Flint.

Candidates should be passionate advocates for all major programs in the school; academic leaders with a track record of effective academic and administrative experiences; and visionary and strategic thinkers who can demonstrate collaboration and administrative accomplishment. Additional specific qualifications include:

• Knowledge and experience in leadership roles at a higher education institution, including an understanding of the complexities of academics in an urban institution
• Commitment to cultural diversity, equity, and inclusion
• Experience with specialized, professional accreditation and with fiscal and personnel management
• Substantial accomplishments in both student recruitment and academic success
• Proven successful progressive leadership experience
• Experience with graduate programs that are similar to those offered at the University of Michigan-Flint
• Excellence in written and oral communication, and interpersonal skills that encourage open dialogue with faculty, staff, students, and the community
• Demonstrated familiarity with state and national accreditation criteria and commitment to meeting each of the standards
• Experience in utilizing data and assessment to inform decisions and practices
• Demonstrated experience with developing and managing budgets
• Demonstrated ability to bring together a diverse group of faculty and staff and to lead them in a manner consistent with the principles of shared governance
• Demonstrated excellence as a leader and manager, with a distinguished record of scholarship, teaching, and service
• Demonstrated strategic thinking and problem-solving skills, and effective fiscal management to enhance the success of the School
• Demonstrated ability to obtain external grant funding and foster research
• The ability to convey and execute a clear vision for the School
• The ability to exercise intellectual leadership and inspire a strong sense of collaborative community and common academic vision among faculty, staff, and students within the School, across the University, and in relation to the external communities of the School and its students and faculty
• Experience in fund development and in developing and acquiring grants
• Understanding and proven responsiveness to the challenges and opportunities in the changing landscape of the programs within the School of Management
• Demonstrated ability and commitment to collaborative leadership with higher administration within the university
• Experience building partnerships in public and private sectors communities preferred
• Experience as an academic administrator with accredited programs preferred
