Candidates must have a minimum of a Master’s Degree in Animal Science or a related field at the time of appointment. Position Summary
The appointment will be a 75% extension/25% instruction fiscal year, non-tenure, public service track faculty position in the Animal and Dairy Science Department ( ADS ), College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, The University of Georgia, Athens, Georgia. The successful candidate will be expected to collaborate with other ADS extension faculty in providing youth and adult education programs. In collaboration with Georgia 4-H and FFA, the successful candidate will give leadership to junior livestock programs in the Animal and Dairy Science department. This will include directing all educational and outreach efforts of this program, exploring ways to continually improve the program and involve new audiences. Specific duties include, but are not limited to, maintaining entry records and accounts for state livestock shows, working with state and area 4-H, FFA and ADS staff in conducting state livestock shows and development of entry materials, educational materials and show reports. In addition, the candidate will work with other junior livestock programs which include but are not limited to, livestock judging contests, 4-H district project achievement completions, area livestock shows, youth field days and junior educational events. Instruction will involve primary responsibility for teaching courses in livestock evaluation and leadership to the undergraduate livestock judging team. Depending on departmental needs, the person in the position may also be involved in teaching some lab sections of hands-on, livestock handling and production/management labs, mentoring/advising undergraduate students, assisting in Departmental recruiting activities, and/or serving as an advisor to student club(s). The successful candidate will be required to develop and document a program of scholarly work in this area, evaluate this work and publish the results in scholarly journals, Extension publications as well as popular press. The position requires extensive contact with Georgia livestock industries, youth, and undergraduate students; therefore, the successful candidate must be able to effectively teach and interact with people in widely varying circumstances. Additional Requirements
A minimum of 1 year working with youth beef, swine and sheep livestock programs is required. Relevant/Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, and/or Certification Preferred Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies
The successful candidate will display ability and interest in teaching and coaching young people in all stages of development in livestock evaluation and judging.
