  • Department Summary

    The Office of Strategic Communication (OSC) is responsible for leading and managing the university's marketing, public relations and media relations activities to advance the university's mission, core values, and strategic directions. The OSC is challenged to develop top-flight external relations and internal communications programs targeting the institution's diverse constituencies and to develop successful marketing and public relations efforts that enhance the image and visibility of California State University, San Bernardino (CSUSB). By promoting the strengths and accomplishments of CSUSB to regional, national and international audiences the OSC plays a critical role in advancing the University and cementing CSUSB's reputation as a preeminent center of intellectual and cultural activity in Inland Southern California.

    Job Summary

    This position serves as the lead strategic communication director and brand manager ensuring CSUSB's vision and image across all media is consistent with the institution's vision and strategic plan. Supervising 6-9 staff members and reporting to the Associate Vice President, Strategic Communication, the Director is responsible for developing, managing and executing CSUSB's brand and strategic communication initiatives. The Director supports and collaborates with advancement, enrollment, athletics, departments and the Colleges in the protection, promotion and enhancement of the CSUSB brand reputation. In addition, the Director will be vital to our entry into a 5-year Capital Campaign that will require the Office of Strategic Communication to be responsible for all Campaign marketing collateral and deliverables from print to digital to electronic videography.

    MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Develop and integrate a broad range of public relations, marketing and communications activities related to the strategic direction and brand positioning of CSUSB.
  • Support CSUSB's mission and strategic goals by generating broader and more comprehensive awareness of the qualities and characteristics that distinguish the institution.
  • Lead and develop all integrated communication materials for all internal and external stakeholders, which includes but is not limited to capital campaign marketing materials, newsletters, print publications, videography, Web, e-news, social media, mobile and other digital communications.
  • In collaboration with Associate Vice President, Strategic Communication, develop a practical and strategic marketing/communications plan to identify strengths and opportunities that differentiate CSUSB from its competition and to more clearly articulate and advance the CSUSB brand identity, broaden awareness of its academic and other programs and support institutional growth objectives.
  • Supervises and directs appropriate staff engaged in marketing/communications activities to ensure a coherent internal and external set of messages and communications platforms.
  • Managing the creative process for all projects from concept to completion by translating marketing objectives into clear creative strategies.
  • Develop and assess measurable goals and objectives that advance CSUSB's strategic marketing initiatives.
  • Conduct, analyze and interpret ongoing analytic marketing initiatives to gauge content effectiveness. Gather data and make recommendations based on those results.
  • Stay current with market trends for both marketing and capital campaign strategies and solutions.
  • Build a culture of collaboration with internal partners including PDC, colleges, schools, institutes, the CSUSB foundation, centers, departments, faculty, alumni relations and all other institutional areas.
  • Ensure all university-related marketing adheres and following established branding guidelines.
  • Collaborate with internal team and other key personnel to brainstorm editorial and digital content of the CSUSB Magazine (online or print format) and online Annual Report.
  • Oversee internal client relationships, pitches, proposals, deliverables and timelines to ensure brand consistency.
  • Provide graphic design and social media support as necessary.


  • Employment Status: Full-time, At-Will, 'Exempt' position, included in the Management Personnel Plan (MPP).

    Work Schedule
  • Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. Some evenings and weekend hours may be required.

  • Deep understanding of community relations, social media, public affairs and the importance of representing the university in a progressive and dynamic manner.
  • Good judgment, political acumen and thorough organizational skills.
  • Expert knowledge of CSUSB, its achievements, mission, vision, goals, objectives, programs and infrastructure.
  • Expert writing and editorial skills.
  • Demonstrates creativity, inspiration and is prolific in writing.

  • Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in mass communications, marketing, journalism, public relations or related field.
  • Eight or more years of experience in marketing/communications roles, preferably in education.

  • Preferred Qualifications
  • Passion for California State University, San Bernardino
  • Working knowledge of University organizational policies, rules, regulations, procurement, purchasing.
  • Experience in a higher education development or marketing setting is preferred.

  • Salary:

    Anticipated Hiring Range: $8,333 per month

    Classification Salary Range: $4,583 - $13,750 per month
