The School of Art in the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts at Arizona State University seeks two outstanding Ph.D. candidates or post-doctoral candidates for the President’s Postdoctoral Fellowship Program, within the areas of Art History/Museum Studies or Art Education.  The fellowship position is a full-time twelve-month academic appointment starting as early as Fall 2021. The fellow is expected to pursue an active research agenda and to teach one course per year for the duration of the fellowship, a minimum of two years. Upon the successful completion of the fellowship, the fellow is eligible for a full-time tenure track appointment as an Assistant Professor within their designated area, serving undergraduate and graduate students.

The School of Art is committed to justice, equity, diversity and inclusion, and is actively developing and participating in programs, policies, and partnerships, which create access, confront and address learning disparities, and support cultural investigations and celebrations. The Presidential Postdoctoral Fellowship Program was launched in Fall 2020, which the School of Art is involved. These programs contribute to a national agenda for social justice, which seeks to challenge the status quo by breaking barriers and building new policies and practices that move us toward a more just and inclusive society.  Successful fellowship candidates will critically engage the notions of racialized differences that are fundamental to socio-political and economic power. The fellowship candidates’ research should demonstrate an emphasis on race, identify formation, and/or representation as applied to art and visual culture during any time period or geographical location.

The postdoctoral scholars selected will join a cohort of 10-15 other postdoctoral scholars at ASU as part of the Presidential Postdoctoral Fellowship Program. The goal of the program is to support the career development of outstanding Ph.D. recipients with great potential for advancing the ASU Charter into a future tenure track appointment at ASU. The program seeks applicants whose professional preparedness, experience, and accomplishments are informed by experiences working with and within groups historically underrepresented in higher education in the United States. Where pools of qualified applicants are strong, priority will be given to applicants who demonstrate, through prior actions and achievements, intentional and actioned commitment diversity, equity, and inclusion. Examples of such contributions are research or creative activity focused on empowering underserved populations; teaching, mentorship, and service that increases equitable access; and inclusion in fields where historically excluded populations are underrepresented.

The School of Art has committed to provide individualized mentorship and career development to ensure each fellow is well prepared to succeed in a future tenure track appointment. Career development and community building will also occur through programmatic support at the ASU Graduate College’s Postdoctoral Affairs Office. For the duration of the fellowship the scholar will be affiliated with the ASU Art Museum, the Institute for Humanities Research, and the Los Angeles County Art Museum.

Required Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated evidence of professional activity;
  • Demonstrated potential to achieve national or international recognition in research;
  • Demonstrated evidence of a research agenda committed to diversity, equity and inclusion;
  • Doctor of Philosophy degree or appropriate other terminal degree obtained within the last 6 years and no later than the start date of the fellowship
  • Interest in teaching a range of levels of undergraduate and graduate courses

Desired Qualifications

  • An articulated research plan or book project in the area of art history, museum studies, and/or art education
  • Experience in foregrounding BIPOC issues and/or traditions in art history/visual culture
  • Proficiency with different instruction modalities including in-person, hybrid, and online courses and ability to develop the same

This position is located at the Arizona State University at the Tempe campus. All postdoctoral fellowship positions are for one year. Options for an additional one or two years of funding or a transition to a tenure track position may be offered, depending on each fellow’s progress and training needs. Faculty tenure track appointments will require a process of review within the designated tenure home unit.
