This is a 9-month tenure-accruing position that will be 30% teaching and 70% research, available in the Department of Family, Youth and Community Sciences, Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, at the University of Florida. This assignment may change in accordance with the needs of the unit. This position is part of the University of Florida Artificial Intelligence initiative. The candidate must have expertise in artificial intelligence (AI) with an applied focus on prevention and intervention programs to improve the mental and/or behavioral health of youth and communities. AI expertise may include the use of predictive statistics and machine learning in the analyses of intensive data coming from images, written or spoken text or other forms of intensive longitudinal data in the personalization or optimization of mental/behavioral health prevention programs. Applicants should demonstrate evidence of successful multidisciplinary collaborations in the fields of youth development and/or prevention science. The teaching assignment will include teaching related to the AI certificate program. Tenure will accrue in the Department of Family, Youth and Community Sciences. The faculty member will participate actively in undergraduate education and graduate education by chairing graduate committees, serving on graduate committees, supervising thesis and dissertation research, supervising undergraduate research, and publishing the results with their graduate students. The faculty member will seek contract and grant funding actively to support their program. The faculty member will engage in Extension activities in their program area.

The successful candidate will engage in scholarly activities related to instruction, including teaching undergraduate and/or graduate courses, advising and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students, participating in curriculum revision and enhancement, seeking funding for the teaching program, supervising undergraduate and graduate research and creative work, publishing teaching-related scholarship, producing learning tools, and engaging in professional development activities related to teaching and advising. Successful candidates must be committed to working with diverse student and community populations and are encouraged to support and participate in the CALS Honors Program, distance education, and international education.

Because of the IFAS land-grant mission, all faculty are expected to be supportive of and engaged in all three mission areas—Research, Teaching and Extension—regardless of the assignment split specified in the position description.

Background Information:

The Department of Family, Youth and Community Sciences (https://fycs.ifas.ufl.edu) is an academic unit in the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences, in the Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (IFAS) at the University of Florida and has diverse Teaching, Research and Extension education programs.

The Department of Family, Youth and Community Sciences has 30 faculty located on the Gainesville campus. The interdisciplinary FYCS academic program has an undergraduate major with enrollment of over 300 students. The department has a total of 60 graduate students enrolled in the master’s degree program and the Ph.D. program in Youth Development and Family Sciences. The unit’s sponsored research and Extension activities have generated in excess of $20 million over the course of the past year. The Department’s mission is to enhance lifelong learning and the personal, social, economic and environmental well-being of diverse individuals, families and communities through state-of-the-art Extension, research, and teaching programs. The department encompasses programs in youth development; human development; family science; consumer economics and resource management; community development and sustainability; and human nutrition, food safety, and health. The department engages in collaborative working relationships with Florida A&M University, Florida State University, and other public and private universities in the state.

Required :

A doctorate (foreign equivalent acceptable) in Human Development and Family Science or a closely related discipline (e.g., Prevention Science, Biostatistics, Quantitative Psychology, Education, Psychology, Public Health, Sociology, Criminology) is required. Candidates must have a strong program of research in the application of AI methods to the field of prevention science and youth development. Candidates should have demonstrated skills in verbal and written communication, interpersonal relationships, and procurement of extramural funding. Candidates must be supportive of the mission of the Land-Grant system. Candidates must also have a commitment to IFAS core values of excellence, diversity, global involvement, and accountability.

Preferred :

Postdoctoral experience is desirable; teaching experience; record of extramural funding; evidence of multidisciplinary collaborations with applied social scientists related to mental/behavioral health.
