Position Summary

This position reports to the Assistant Director of Graduate & Extended Learning. The Outreach Specialist is responsible for the recruitment, strategic development, management, and evaluation of regional, state, national and international programs. There is a focus on programs serving pre-college age individuals, but they develop and support other types of programs as well. This individual will assure Graduate & Extended Learning’s compliance with university, state, and federal policies regarding youth programming. They will work with campus partners to develop centralized processes to support campus events and conferences of all types, with the goal of growing the number of programs hosted on campus. Finally, the Outreach Specialist will work with the UWL Foundation, local employers, and grant-making entities to develop and manage scholarship funds for youth programs, with an emphasis on increasing access for individuals from historically marginalized groups.

Description of College / Department / Program / Division / Unit

Graduate & Extended Learning is a new unit on campus, formed by the merger of Graduate Studies and Extended Learning. We work to connect the university to the community by offering innovative educational opportunities. We support and advocate for campus graduate degree programs and credit course opportunities, provide conference and event services, and support a wide array of professional development opportunities. We are a fast-paced office with multiple deadlines, and our work changes often. For that reason we value collaboration, communication, and strong organizational skills.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in Recreation, Business, Marketing, Education or related field.
• Experience in managing program budgets.
• Event or program management experience.
• Excellent organizational, communication and writing skills.
• Experience using Microsoft Office Suite programs including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
• Knowledge of policy regarding youth programming.
• Experience working with youth.
• Valid driver’s license.

Preferred Qualifications

• Higher education experience, preferably in program planning.
• Marketing experience.
• Negotiation skills.
• Public speaking/presentation experience.
• Experience working with a diverse group of youth participants through K12 education or youth organizations.
• Ability to partner effectively with campus and community stakeholders (faculty, staff, youth, parents, and K12 educators).
• Grant writing skills.

Physical Demands

Walking, climbing stairs, lifting of program materials.

Working conditions and environment

Some required driving and air travel, and evening and weekend work.
The ability to have and maintain a valid driver’s license meeting the criteria for driving a vehicle on University/State business is required. Driver Authorization required upon hire.

Program Management

Duties to Support Responsibility

• Collaborate with UW-La Crosse faculty and staff and with community partners to develop and manage programs, with a focus on programs serving youth participants.
• Perform administrative duties to include but not limited to development of proposals and budgets, creation of agreements for program collaborations, and development and control of deadlines.
• Contribute to the development of marketing plans in collaboration with marketing staff.
• Collaborate with internal and external vendors including but not limited to meeting venues, lodging and travel accommodations, catering services, and videoconferencing software.
• Provide on-site management and coordination with partners during programs.

Duties to Support Responsibility

• Serve as the Graduate & Extended Learning point person for the Youth Policy Committee.
• Work with campus partners to develop centralized processes to support campus events and conferences.
• Participate in professional development and networking activities, including those offered to members of the Association of Collegiate Conference and Events Directors – International (membership supported by UWL ).
• Represent UWL at Impact Meeting hosted by Explore La Crosse.

Duties to Support Responsibility

• Work with UWL Foundation and other campus partners to select scholarship recipients and manage scholarship funds, and to seek out new opportunities for scholarship support
• Research and prepare proposals to external funding agencies to support youth program development and participation by individuals from historically marginalized groups.
