Texas Tech University (TTU) invites nominations, inquiries, and applications for the role of Dean, College of Arts & Sciences. The Dean serves as Chief Academic Officer responsible for executive management of the College of Arts & Sciences and its full range of programs and initiatives. The Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences will be responsible for providing transformative leadership, focus, and strategic vision to lead the College and develop innovative ways to enhance its service to the region, the state, and the world.

TTU, the flagship of the Texas Tech University System, has the distinction of being the largest comprehensive higher education institution in the western two-thirds of the state of Texas. The university is the major institution of higher education in a region larger than 46 of the nation’s 50 states and enrolls more than 40,000 students. Texas Tech’s 17 intercollegiate athletics programs compete in the Big 12 Conference.

TTU is a Carnegie R1 university offering over 150 undergraduate, 100 master’s, and 50 doctoral degree programs. Texas Tech is one of only 16 Hispanic Serving Institutions included in the Carnegie R1 category. The university received its ninth consecutive Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award from INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine and in 2020 earned a five-out-of-five-stars rating on the Campus Pride Index, a national benchmark for measuring progress in creating an inclusive campus learning environment for LGBTQIA+ students, faculty, and staff. Texas Tech was also ranked in the top 10 in an Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities (APLU)-sponsored poll of corporate recruiters nationwide as the school whose graduates were the best-trained, educated, and able to succeed once hired. The Texas Tech University College of Arts & Sciences was founded in 1925 as one of the university’s four original colleges and includes departments or programs in: Biological Sciences, Chemistry & Biochemistry, Classical & Modern Languages & Literatures, Economics, English, Environmental Toxicology, Geosciences, History, Interdisciplinary & General Studies, Kinesiology & Sport Management, Mathematics & Statistics, Philosophy, Physics & Astronomy, Political Science, Psychological Sciences, Sociology, Anthropology & Social Work, and Wind Energy. The college is home to a record enrollment of more than 11,000 students, making it the largest college on the Texas Tech campus. Students within Arts & Sciences can select from 42 bachelor’s degree programs, 34 master’s degree programs, and 14 doctoral programs. Nationally acclaimed faculty have a global impact across a vast array of fields and almost $11 million in Restricted Research Expenditures.

The Dean, who reports directly to the Provost, is the chief executive officer and oversees all matters related to the College. The Dean will provide the leadership and vision needed for the College to excel and advance TTU’s teaching, research, and service missions.

The Dean will be a dynamic leader with impeccable integrity and a proven record of successful leadership, orchestrating well-planned development and growth in undergraduate and graduate programs, increased student enrollment, and elevation of the academic profile of students. The Dean will maintain and grow research and other creative endeavors, with an emphasis on building equitable research infrastructure across the College. The Dean will also bring a record of accomplishments in garnering financial support with strong fiscal management skills. The Dean will demonstrate a collaborative, transparent leadership style that fosters shared governance and will possess a deep commitment to excellence in teaching, research, student success, and diversifying faculty. Key Selection Criteria include:

  • PhD. and tenurable at the rank of professor in one of the departments of the College with a distinguished record of scholarship, teaching, and securing external research support
  • Record of and vision for promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Successful previous leadership/managerial experience
  • Strong communicator and collaborator (with/to internal, external, peer, and higher administration constituencies)
  • Skill at fundraising/revenue optimization
  • Proficiency in budgets/analytics
  • Record of innovation and creativity
  • Record of respecting shared governance and commitment to academic freedom
  • Commitment to a student-centered university
  • Commitment to global/international engagement
  • Vision for advancing the reputation of the College
  • Vision for advancing the infrastructure of the College.
