Organizational Unit Overview
The Division of Student Affairs actively supports the University’s missions of education, research, and service by providing comprehensive programs and services to assist each student in developing intellectually, socially, morally, and culturally. Under the Division of Student Affairs, the Department for Disability Support Services (DSS) at East Carolina University is the campus resource for providing academic and programmatic accommodations to students with disabilities. DSS works directly with students, faculty and staff to assist with all aspects of the student accommodation process on campus. DSS acts as a liaison to multiple departments on campus that impact academic and campus accessibility. Frequent communication occurs between campus stakeholders to assure compliance with Federal and State statues relative to individuals with disabilities. Job Duties
The Assistant Director will be part of a team that provides comprehensive support services to students with disabilities. Focus of the position will be on educating newly registered students on the process for accessing approved accommodations, as well as providing coaching skills such as self-advocacy and executive function, essential skills for students with disabilities in the higher education setting. Additionally, the Assistant Director, in collaboration with the Associate Director, will develop programs and marketing materials to increase the visibility of the department on campus.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Manage a caseload of students, working through the registration and testing accommodation process, and providing coaching, including self-advocacy skills, outreach to faculty, and general advising responsibilities
  • Attends weekly staff meetings as a member of the team that determines a student’s eligibility for services by reviewing documentation and request for accommodation
  • Perform student accommodation meetings to review the steps the student needs to take to access approved accommodations
  • Participate in web training and take initiative to master Clockwork, the new accommodation management system.
  • Utilize Clockwork to manage delivery of student accommodations, and educate students on the use of Clockwork to set up academic and testing accommodations.
  • Create alternative formats of materials including enlarged print
  • Assist in proctoring exams for students including acting as a reader and/or scribe
  • Meet with students in need of for coaching appointments, teaching strategies for time management and studying, and providing academic support
  • Maintain timely and accurate case notes for all student contacts
  • Deliver presentations to groups and classes on disability related topics
  • As needed, provide support to the Testing Coordinator in the form of cross training on the administration of tests and exams
  • Represent DSS on campus committees as appropriate
  • Maintain confidentiality in compliance with FERPA
  • Other duties as assigned.

The Assistant Director reports directly to the Director of Disability Support Services.

Minimum Education/Experience

  • Post-Baccalaureate degree in Counseling, Psychology, Social Work, Higher Education, Rehabilitation Studies, or related field plus one (1) year of progressive experience working directly with individuals with disabilities; or Bachelor’s degree in Counseling, Psychology, Social Work, Higher Education, Rehabilitation Studies, or related field plus three (3) years of progressive experience working directly with individuals with disabilities.
  • Demonstrated knowledge, training or experience interpreting federal and state laws regarding disability rights and their application to higher education.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of understanding of disability rights and disability culture.
  • Demonstrated application of a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Demonstrated strong organizational and administrative skills, advanced computer skills, ability to thoroughly document conversations and actions regarding case management, excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

  • Master’s Degree in a human services field such as Rehabilitation Counseling, Counseling, Psychology, Social Work, Special Education or related field.
  • Direct experience determining eligibility for disability related accommodations.
  • Experience working in a college or university disability services office.
  • Familiarity with various neuropsychological, psycho-educational and psychological assessment batteries used in the diagnosis of learning disabilities, mental health conditions, AD/HD and traumatic brain injury, and interpreting the data from such reports into appropriate accommodations for the post-secondary setting.
