The University of Missouri – Kansas City (UMKC) and the University of Missouri (MU) seek a visionary, resourceful and passionate leader to be the inaugural Executive Director of the University of Missouri System-wide NextGen Data Science and Analytics Innovation Center (dSAIC). Based at the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) and operating in direct partnership with the University of Missouri-Columbia (MU or Mizzou), the NextGen Data Science and Analytics Innovation Center is designed as a leading-edge data analytics center that will bring revolutionary changes to industry. 

With both the industry-rich ecosystem in Kansas City as well as the specified partnership to the NextGen Precision Health Initiative, the inaugural Executive Director will inherit a tremendous opportunity and team of research collaborators across the UM System to make the unique transformations many desire to accomplish. This individual will oversee primarily the non-health related portfolio of the dSAIC.

Reporting administratively to the Chancellor of UMKC, the Executive Director will provide the expertise and leadership to ensure that the Center’s overarching aspiration to become Missouri’s hub for innovative research and expertise in data science, analytics, data-protection (cybersecurity) and artificial intelligence; solving critical societal problems, being a state-of-the-art resource for industry and the UM universities, producing a skilled workforce to meet growing industry demands and spurring economic development becomes a reality. The Center with its defined resources and its access to the university resources will be capable of providing the expertise, infrastructure and skills to identify, process, analyze, and store massive datasets using state-of-the-art high-performance computing and cloud resources.

The Executive Director will be responsible for the overall planning, function, and long-term support of the Center and leading the Center’s staff, advisory boards, external constituents, corporate members, donors and clients. Key responsibilities involve interacting with UMKC, MU and other UM System faculty, community groups and industrial partners, engaging them in collaborative programming and applicable real-life projects; managing Center staff dedicated to collaboration and innovation associated with data analysis, cybersecurity and artificial intelligence applications; establishing the Center’s business model; and leading outreach and fundraising efforts.

Strategic and innovative leaders are sought with academic or industry background with demonstrated accomplishments across the selected areas of Data Science, Cybersecurity, or Artificial Intelligence. Candidates must possess thorough knowledge of administrative, budgetary, human resources and financial principles and practices as well as possess strong interpersonal skills. The ability to work collaboratively with a diversity of internal and external peers, industry partners and community groups is essential. It’s expected that the successful candidate will possess advanced degree(s) in a related field, preferably with an academic record of scholarship, innovation as well as scientific and/or technological achievement. Candidates with substantial business development and/or program expansion experience as well as a track record of successful fundraising or the ability to identify sources of support from various benefactors will be prioritized.

The University anticipates this appointment will be made in the late fall of 2021/ early spring of 2022. Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled.
