The Institute for Clinical and Translational Research seeks aResearch Nutritionistwho will work as a specialist in clinical research nutrition management with advanced expertise in nutrition and specialized nutritional therapies. This position plays a key role in the recommendation and provision of nutritional therapies and the development of the nutritional component of research protocols. Some dietary outpatient counseling for research participants. May participate as co-investigator and nutritional consultant for research protocols.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Reporting Directly to the ICTR Nutrition Program Director.
  • Interacts heavily with Faculty clinical investigators, research coordinators, nutrition and nursing staff.
  • Research:
    • Review and evaluate nutritional design of research protocols, design specialized diets, direct production and service of these diets.
    • Assume active role in activities of the research units, including scientific data collection, professional writing, publication, and developing programs to further the goals of the units.
  • Training:
    • Instructs dietetic interns and other hospital staff on research dietetics, metabolic techniques, protocol development, and current research topics.
    • Presents in-services.
  • Clinical Skills:
    • ​​​​​​​Monitors and evaluates nutritional care of research participants.
    • Acts as a resource person in nutrition for physicians, nurses, dietitians, patient care committees, etc.
    • Participates in staff rounds, attends protocol presentations and discusses nutritional services with medical staff.
    • Support/Assists Nutrition Research Director in the training and development of the Research Nutrition Technicians.
    • Assist Nutrition Research Director in the evaluation of program goals, policies and procedures, standards of care and performance improvement.
    • Assist Nutrition Research Director in execution of the research nutrition rotation program for internship programs from Johns Hopkins Bayview MC, University of Maryland Medical Systems, Sodexho, and University of Maryland, College Park
    • Prepares reports, collects and analyzes data, and maintains records.

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • Bachelor of Science in Nutrition, Dietetics, Community Nutrition, Sport Medicine or related field required.

Technical Qualifications/Specialized Certifications:

  • Registered Dietitian, Licensed Dietitian or LD eligible in the state of Maryland. LD eligible must obtain license within 90 days of hire.
  • Must maintain licensure throughout duration of employment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree and/or at least two years post LD-eligible clinical experience including at least one year in Pediatrics.
  • Clinical internship experience may be considered.

Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Analytical ability to critically evaluate research protocols.
  • Computer literacy.

Physical Requirements:

  • Minimal, possibly some lifting, bending to measure patients, minor cooking for testing recipes.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
