The Kalhor Laboratory at the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Johns Hopkins University (https://kalhorlab.bme.jhu.edu/) is seeking a Research Technologist who will work under the general supervision of a faculty investigator to carry out research in genomics, synthetic biology, and developmental biology. The Research Technologist will assist lab members in carrying out their research and will have the opportunity to perform own experiments within the context of laboratory projects. There is the potential for authorship in scientific papers and participation in conferences.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Participate in all aspects of the project, working individually or as part of a team with other research staff.
  • Carry out experiments to advance the project and collect project data.
  • Perform data collection and analysis on assigned projects under the supervision of the PI or senior lab members. This includes independently performing biochemical and molecular assays in vitro, on cultures, or animal models and troubleshooting experiments using scientific knowledge.
  • Apply problem solving skills based on an understanding of the research and experience, and progressively develop skill base and knowledge of lab research and relevant assays.
  • Identify and resolve problems involved in research assays.
  • Organize and maintain animal and experimental records in paper and computerized research file formats.
  • Prepare mandatory reports and documents/protocols.
  • Prepare and maintain tissue cultures, as well as, cell lines (includes monitoring incubators, biological hoods, etc.).
  • Sustain an orderly laboratory workspace; perform related laboratory maintenance, monitor inventory of supplies, clean equipment, and place lab orders.
  • Participate in weekly research group meetings.
  • Collaborate with, and understand the role of, senior lab members and accept constructive guidance.
  • Contribute to and assist in preparation of manuscripts and abstracts.
  • Maintain a good working knowledge of all assigned protocols and reporting requirements.
  • Monitor supplies, medicines and instruments for the research team.
  • Perform miscellaneous related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry or related field.
  • Enthusiasm about and commitment to performing top-level research.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in a molecular biology, cell biology, or genetics lab environment.
  • Experience in biochemical and molecular biology assays such as gel electrophoresis and PCR.
  • Experience in tissue culture.
  • Experience vertebrate animal experimentation.
  • Experience in fluorescent microscopy.
  • Experience in coding languages such as Perl, Python, R, and MATLAB.
  • Experience in immunohistochemistry.

Starting Salary Range: $15 - $19.44/hr (commensurate with experience)

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
