The Johns Hopkins Department of Orthopaedic Surgery is seeking a full-timePhysician Assistantin the foot and ankle division to provide orthopaedic care and triage for orthopaedic patients, under the direction, supervision and responsibility of a supervising physician, and in accordance with established regulatory and hospital policies and procedures. The floor advanced practice provider is responsible for evaluating the patient's health status through diagnostic procedures and tests and providing therapeutic patient care under direction of a supervising physician. This position will also see patients independently in clinic and triage to the foot and ankle surgeon as appropriate.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Interviews patients and compiles patient medical histories to assist in determination of health status. Performs physical examinations of patients, noting normal and abnormal findings. Provides follow-up care as needed for Orthopaedic patients, including but limited to wound care and dressings for patients. Coordinates care plans and provides on-site continuity of care with the patients, families and staff. Dictates discharge summaries and completes discharge paperwork. Obtains specimens from patients and runs routine laboratory tests and procedures; performs diagnostic tests, orders and follows up on imaging studies, orders non-routine laboratory tests or procedures as required.
  • Performs consults/evaluations. Evaluate patient history, physical examination findings and laboratory values, and makes preliminary diagnosis of patients for review by physician. Develops care/treatment plan for patient according to established protocols and procedures; confers and consults with supervisory physician and other professionals before implementing treatment. Writes post-operative orders which include laboratory tests, medications, and care plans according to established procedure and protocol, for review by physician. Writes prescriptions as needed. Complete patient forms such as disability, FMLA, and insurance, etc. as needed.

  • Attends patient rounds with physician or members of medical staff to monitor patient progress, and provide information to staff on patient's care plan, condition and progress of patient. Provides education and guidance to patients and family members in maintaining good health, disease prevention and home care under supervision of a physician. Signs out patients with active issues and concerns. Attends regularly scheduled continuing education programs to ensure current knowledge of procedures and health care plans and protocols.

  • Facilitates communication between own team and other consulting medical services. Requests consultations with other departments, as necessary. Acts as liaison with other medical services (social work, rehabilitation medicine, etc.). Bills fees for all services rendered. Completes all required documentation for billing accuracy and compliance.

Performs miscellaneous related duties as assigned.

May require rotation to other specialty areas based on an organizational or business need. This position will be required to work in the Orthopaedic Convenience Care After Hours Clinic – evenings and weekends as needed.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree; Certification by the NCCPA or similar national certifying body; Completion of a CAAHEP certified Physician Assistant program. Must be licensed as PA in State of Maryland or other state where practicing. Experience may be considered in lieu of bachelor's degree, as permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.Current CPR certification required. Must maintain current licensure and certification during duration of employment. Completion of the JHH credentialing process is required prior to start date.

JHU Equivalency Formula:30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

Preferred Qualifications:

Master's degree plus two years’ experience. Ability to use various billing and patient information computer systems. Knowledge of various payer processing and submission guidelines. Experience in IDX and PCS. Knowledge of third party payer requirements.

Additional Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of medical terminology, Anatomy, Physiology, Chemistry, Psychology, Pharmacology, Clinical Medicine, Radiology, Microbiology and Pathology as acquired through completion of an accredited program.
  • Work requires six-to-twelve months’ on-the-job experience to obtain a comprehensive understanding of clinical and/or surgical procedures, patient care procedures, medical protocols and testing procedures.
  • Work requires analytical ability necessary to evaluate and determine health status of patient and implement proper care plan.
  • Interpersonal skills necessary to interview, teach and counsel patients; instruct health care personnel on procedures and treatment.

Technical Qualifications or Specialized Certifications:

Physical Requirements:

Sitting, standing and walking for extended period. Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction. Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s). Ability to move standard equipment through a hospital or clinical environment.

Working Conditions:

May require some travel to other outpatient sites or clinics. May require evenings or weekends for coverage in Orthopedic Convenience Care Clinic.

Some exposure to contaminated materials, infectious specimens and communicable diseases, but potential for harm or personal injury is limited when proper safety and health precautions are followed. Work requires mental and visual concentration up to fifty percent of work time during patient histories, physical examinations or surgical procedures.

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing.
