The Assistant Dean will help define, implement and enforce academic policies and practices and give support to faculty advisors and departments, and will develop and maintain strong, collaborative working relationships with faculty advisors and the academic departments in the Whiting School of Engineering and with key departments In the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences. The assistant dean will work closely and collaboratively with other academic offices and committees, including the KSAS Office of Academic Advising, the Office of Academic Support, the Office of the Registrar, Undergraduate Admissions, the Student Affairs division, the Office of Pre-professional Advising, the Life Design team, Office of Study Abroad, Athletics, the Office of Parent and Family Relations, Student Disability Services, and the Office of First-year Experience and Orientation. The Assistant Dean will serve on a number of ad hoc and standing committees that address a variety of student needs and which support the collaborative work with colleagues from the offices mentioned. The person will also guide the use of technology to effectively provide advising services and information to students, including online degree auditing. They oversee all undergraduates’ academic standing and graduation from the Whiting School. They may also serve a reduced caseload of freshmen advisees and take on other administrative duties as they arise. The Assistant Dean will also collaborate with the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Academic Affairs on recommendations from the Second Commission on Undergraduate Education (CUE2), particularly pertaining to advising and faculty mentoring.

We have also recently launched an innovative program for first-generation, limited income students in both WSE and KSAS. In collaboration with the Center for Student Success in our Homewood Student Affairs division, we are entering the third year of our Success Coaching in Academic Advising (SCAA) program. The director of the SCAA program has an indirect reporting line to the Assistant Deans of Academic Advising in both WSE and KSAS and a direct reporting line to the Executive Directive of the Center for Student Success. The program is staffed by a cadre of academic advisor/success coaches who are embedded in the advising offices for service delivery to their students. The WSE Assistant Dean for Academic Advising will serve on the leadership team for this program.
