The Department of Communication Studies at Northwestern University’s School of Communication seeks an open rank, tenure-track faculty with expertise in communication and health for a position to begin as early as September 2018. The faculty will be part of the School’s newly established Center for Communication and Health.

 

The ideal candidate will demonstrate:

 

  • A record of achievement in teaching, research, and service;

 

  • A thorough and broad education in communication theory and research and ideally a doctorate in the field of communication;

 

  • The ability to lead and work effectively in interdisciplinary teams across the social sciences, engineering, medicine, and allied health disciplines;

 

  • A career commitment to the study and improvement of communication process and practices related to health information, health decision-making/behavior, health care quality and safety, health informatics, human-computer interaction, or systems engineering/design;

 

  • A record of high quality, high impact externally-funded collaborative and interdisciplinary research in the area of communication and health;

 

  • Success in developing and teaching curricula for students planning careers in health care;

 

  • Success in leading and managing research

 

The successful candidate will be expected to:

 

  • organize and lead a successful interdisciplinary research program involving faculty from communication, engineering, and medicine;
  • teach undergraduate and graduate courses, including the professional MS program in Health Communication;
  • participate in the governance, growth and development of the Center for Communication and Health

The mission of the Center for Communication and Health is to improve the quality and safety of healthcare as patients experience it, to improve the health of populations, and to reduce the cost of care by applying the interdisciplinary tools of the communication arts and sciences to the most pressing challenges in healthcare.
