The Department of Biomedical Engineering seeks a Research Assistantwho will assist with research activities and resources for work performed in the I-STAR Laboratory and Carnegie Center for Surgical Innovation. Work with members of the lab and assist with the development of phantoms for realistic simulation of patient motion in Cone-Beam CT and in the development of algorithms for simulation and compensation of Cone-Beam CT artifacts caused by patient motion. This person will also assist in carrying out studies of effects of patient motion in Cone-Beam CT in accordance with good research practices in such activities, including pre-processing and quantitative analysis of x-ray imaging data, management of large datasets, lab inventory, and record keeping.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Assist research team with preparation of imaging experiments on x-ray CT systems.
  • Perform x-ray data processing and analysis under the supervision of senior researchers.
  • Oversee data collection, develop and run routine reports. Use standard mathematical and statistical tools and computer programs to review data, and utilize data cleaning measures to ensure accuracy of data.
  • Organize and maintain large collections of imaging data.
  • Adhere to protocol requirements to ensure validity of clinical research data. Maintain a good working knowledge of all assigned experimental protocols and data analysis techniques.
  • Maintain paper and computerized research files.
  • Participate in weekly research group meetings.
  • Meet regularly with designated laboratory staff to review recent data, troubleshoot current experiments, review new experimental protocols, and prioritize new experiments.
  • Prepare mandatory reports and documents/protocols.
  • Conduct literature searches and participate in drafting scientific communications (papers and conference presentations).
  • Refer to and comply with procedure manuals, follow proper laboratory protocols and safety policy/procedures, and be familiar with material data safety sheets in assigned work areas. Adhere to all Health Safety and Environment (HSE) guidelines applicable to assigned work area.
  • Perform miscellaneous related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline.
  • Some related experience.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

*JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job. *

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in a research laboratory that applies techniques of anatomical, functional, and/or structural imaging analysis or acquisition.

Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Adequate knowledge in biomedical engineering and imaging physics.
  • Familiarity and experience with CT data acquisition, reconstruction, and image analysis, in particular in relationship to simulation and analysis of patient motion in Cone-Beam CT imaging.
  • Working knowledge of research practices for quantification of Cone-Beam CT image quality and motion-induced image quality degradation.
  • Experience in design of dynamic phantoms for simulation of patient motion in Cone-Beam CT.
  • Experience in algorithmic approaches for motion artifacts correction in Cone-Beam CT.
  • Experience with common computer programs such as Microsoft Office, with data analysis using Matlab and Python, and with specialized packages for machine learning methods applied to imaging data (Pytorch, Tensorflow).
  • Willingness to learn specialized software used in the research.
  • Understanding of statistical concepts relevant for analysis of experimental data from imaging studies.

Physical Requirements:

  • May transport equipment and supplies usually less than 40 pounds from one area to another (in the laboratory or on campus).

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
