Job Description

The laboratory of Dr. Michelle Olsen in the School of Neuroscience at Virginia Tech is seeking a Postdoctoral Associate to explore the cellular and molecular basis of disordered breathing in Rett syndrome.

Our studies use a combination of electrophysiology, confocal microscopy, and genetic approaches to identify cellular/molecular mechanisms contributing to the control of breathing in health and disease.

Highly motivated individuals holding a Ph.D. and a strong background in cellular neuroscience are encouraged to apply. This is a 12-month appointment subject to renewal. Salary will be commensurate with experience.

Required Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in the Life Sciences. Ph.D. must be awarded no more than four years prior to the effective date of appointment with a minimum of one year of eligibility remaining;
  • Strong interest in understanding the cellular/molecular basis of neurological disease;
  • Strong communication skills;
  • Ability to work independently.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience maintaining mouse colonies;
  • Background in cellular electrophysiology;
  • Experience in microscopy, preferably confocal microscopy;
  • Training in basic molecular biology techniques.
