The Associate Director for Assessment serves as a member of the Housing and Residence Life Leadership Team. This position is responsible for providing leadership to increase departmental knowledge of student experiences, program effectiveness, student learning, and best practices for residential engagement; leading the establishment of assessment priorities, identification of data needs and gaps, development of assessment plans and annual timeline, analysis of data and sharing of findings to support a culture of evidenced based practice. The Associate Director for Assessment will ensure that assessment activities align with learning outcomes and the Department and Division’s strategic goals and objectives; serves as the liaison for Housing and Residence Life and OPIER. In collaboration with departmental leadership, this position will work to design and implement the departmental assessment plan, create, and deploy assessment tools, and interpret and disseminate outcomes to the department and campus partners. This position will report to the Executive Director for Residential Education & Campus Life. Principle responsibilities include planning, implementation, interpretation, and dissemination of departmental assessment efforts. The individual in this position will be responsible for the preparation and implementation of the departmental assessment plan, evaluation of signature events and high impact practices, and interpreting data to provide recommendations that will enhance program effectiveness; and additional responsibilities include, but not limited to:

Assessment Coordination and Development

  • Create and coordinate departmental assessment and evaluation including data collection, management, and dissemination.
  • Ensure departmental assessment efforts support departmental, divisional, and university mission, vision, and goals.
  • Develop rigorous, valid, and reliable instruments that assess student learning and satisfaction, or evaluation of programs and services.
  • Develop and maintain an assessment template for living learning communities including pre, post, and mid-year assessments.
  • Consult with members of department to provide expertise in designing, implementing, and interpreting assessment, evaluation, and research projects.
  • Serve on the divisional assessment committee.
  • Cultivate partnerships with OPIER, IT, and the Division of Enrollment Management and Student Affairs on assessment efforts. 8. Provide monthly departmental updates and share important data.
  • Develop and implement methods to share data regularly with students and campus partners to inform them of our work.
  • Identify and utilize institutional and national metrics to measure student learning and development.
  • Create and administer assessment of signature programs.
  • Identify opportunities to assess High Impact Practices and ground results/recommendations in current theoretical frameworks and best practices.
  • Prepare annual departmental assessment reports as needed.


Assessment Leadership

  • Chair the departmental Assessment Committee.
  • Extract information from existing data that predict future outcomes/trends related to student success, growth, engagement, and retention.
  • Determine professional development needs of staff regarding assessment, evaluation, and research.
  • Coordinate assessment workshops or competency development plans for departmental staff.
  • Analyze, interpret, and disseminate available data specific to new initiatives and key strategic projects, collaborate with department leaders to help establish assessment plans for programs and services, identify assessment and evaluation opportunities that will impact departmental decision making.
  • Assist with development of annual report and other documents shared with university partners. Effectively use results in determining Department's accomplishments of programs, services, and initiatives.
  • Analyze, interpret, and disseminate data from professional literature, national and institutional data, and student-focused studies to inform new initiatives, strategic projects, and best practices.
  • Ensure departmental assessment efforts are consistent with Institutional Research and SACS guidelines. Extract data sets that predict future outcomes and trends related to students and the services and programs provided by the Housing department.
  • Collaborate with OPIER and IT to develop and implement dashboard indicators to inform stakeholders of practices and services.
  • Work to identify grant writing opportunities that would provide potential funding for academic and leadership initiatives.


Departmental Initiatives

  • Collaborate with academic and student affairs partners on research that focuses on student development changes, student learning, student engagement and experiences.
  • Develop and maintain collaborative working relationships with Campus Life units including convening a working group of unit staff to identify needs, discern objectives and develop effective approaches to assessment and research for students and other stakeholders.
  • Work with Openings, Closings, Orientation, Open Houses, Conferences, Admissions, or other assigned areas to successfully integrate residential life initiatives and information sessions throughout the academic year and summer.


Other Duties

  • Recommend resources to support assessment initiatives. Formulate relevant policies, procedures, and schedules.
  • Perform other duties incidental to the work described herein.
  • Availability – Be available and visible to residents and staff; serve as a positive role model; maintain office hours; understand the nature of work may require some night and weekend hours; attend departmental functions.
  • Utilize, analytic software, technology, and data visualization tools to showcase data in formats that promote knowledge and support data-driven decisions.


The Ideal candidate will possess the following:

  • Abilities to use statistical software Abilities to defend the results.
  • Abilities to develop and implement policies, procedures, goals, and objectives.
  • Abilities to apply principles and practices of strategic planning development and evaluation.
  • Experience in strategic planning, assessment leadership or related field.

Minimum qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree; three (3+) or more years of professional experience working with the development of learning outcomes, assessment plans and conducting assessment projects; ability to collect, interpret, and report data and to write informational materials and reports; strong effective communication skills (oral and written); ability to build teams and work collaboratively; strong organizational skills with attention to detail and accuracy; ability to work well under pressure with multiple and changing deadlines; demonstrated proficiency utilizing technology in the implementation, analysis and reporting of data such as web applications, online systems, database software, and standard office packages; ability to work independently and as part of a team; manage several responsibilities at the same time resolve; knowledge of student learning theory and developmental outcomes, and experience in its application; and demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment.

Preferred qualifications:

Master’s degree, previous experience working with residential education or co-curricular learning initiatives experience; involvement with state or regional conferences; familiarity with systems such as Campus Labs and EBI Skyfactor; familiarity or experience working with SQL; and experience with living learning communities and faculty members.
