Job Summary

The Auburn University Office of the Chief Information Security Officer, reporting to the Office of the Chief Information Officer, is seeking applicants for a Cybersecurity Engineer. Under general supervision, responsible for the planning, engineering, developing, implementing, and compliance monitoring of organization-wide information security though the use of security tools. Performs analysis to ensure security controls are consistently implemented, integrating new technology with IT security standards; developing and executing plans for monitoring, assessing, and verifying security controls across all major information systems; and developing, evaluating, and exercising IT survivability and contingency plans to protect the University’s information assets. This role will be responsible for the maintenance and management security tools, tuning security appliances, and Linux server maintenance. This position is also responsible for maintenance, management, and campus roll out of campus cyber security program. Other cybersecurity duties may be assigned as needed.

Essential Functions

1. Assists in ensuring information security policies and procedures are followed.
2. Supports and participates in SOC engineering efforts such as tool and data integration, reporting, development of automation, and evaluation of new technologies.
3. Assists as backup or co-lead for other cybersecurity areas as assigned.
4. Oversees Cybersecurity Awareness and Security Training (primary).
5. Tunes and participates in End Point Protection
6. Tunes and participates in Data Loss Prevention
7. Assists with communication, reporting, and alerting on general information security issues as well as on specific assignments within Information Security tool sets.
8. Security tool tuning and maintenance.
9. Works with vendors to resolve security problems and develops infrastructure solutions.
10. Implements new technology deployments and integration testing.
11. Assists in incident response efforts.
12. May perform other related duties as assigned by the CISO or Cybersecurity Manager.

Degree in Computer Science or IT-related field preferred.

Experience configuring, tuning, and evaluating efficacy of key security tools, including but not limited to firewalls, VPN, SIEM, anti-malware, etc. Detailed work experience in cyber security is preferred.

Requirements for Additional Job Levels

High School Diploma requires 13 years of experience.

Associate’s dergee requires 9 years of experience.

Bachelor’s degree requires 5 years of experience.

Education Level

When a candidate has the required experience, but lacks the required education, they may normally apply additional relevant experience toward the education requirement, at a rate of two (2) years relevant experience per year of required education.

Minimum Skills and Abilities

1. Experience configuring and tuning security tools and appliances.
2. Knowledge of basic networking concepts and protocols.
3. Understanding of common types of attacks & vulnerabilities including CVEs, OWASP Top 10
4. Must have team leadership skills, negotiation skills, and advanced client relation skills.
5. Ability to remain up-to-date with privacy and security regulations.
6. Ability to recognize, analyze, and solve a variety of problems.
7. Ability to effectively communicate technical concepts to a non-technical audience.

Minimum Technology Skills

Minimum License and Certifications

Industry recognized cybersecurity certification required within six (6) months of hire date as a requirement. Recognized certifications include the Certified Information Systems Security Professional ( CISSP ), Certified Information Security Manager ( CISM ), Certified Information Systems Auditor ( CISA ), CompTIA Security+, Certified Ethical Hacker ( CEH ), Certified in Risk and Information Systems Control ( CRISC ) and others as deemed appropriate by the CISO of Auburn University.

Desired Qualifications

1. CISSP, CISM, CISA and/or recognized IT industry certification.
2. Proven track record of installing, configuring, and managing enterprise IT systems, servers, or appliances.
3. Applicable security experience in a university environment.
4. Linux administration experience.
