Position Summary:
Job Summary
Campus Safety Specialists are tasked with providing a safe and secure environment for the University community and all its members. As members of the Student Life Team, Campus Safety Specialists are expected to serve as a resource for students and the community; with the overall goal of enhancing the quality of life and student experience on campus. NOTE: This position requires the ability to work 1st, 2nd, and 3rd shifts, as well as some weekends and holidays.
Specific Responsibilities
- Communicate effectively with students, staff, faculty, guests,
and works with law enforcement Specialists to provide positive
customer service and build relationships both on campus and in our
local communities.
o Serve as a community outreach liaison
o Build trust-based relationships with students both formally and informally - Attend events as a representative for the Campus Safety
Department
- Work collaboratively with members of the Residence Life Team
and other University Departments.
- Under general supervision, Campus Safety Specialists are
responsible for conducting mobile and foot safety walks and checks
of the campus, responding to fire and security alarms, suspicious
person reports, and medical emergencies, securing buildings, and
providing safety escorts for students.
- Conduct, or assist in conducting, investigations into
violations of university policies and federal, state or local laws,
motor vehicle accidents, and other incidents as assigned. Prepare
reports documenting investigation.
- Monitor and enforce on campus parking regulations, to include
issuing citations and towing vehicles. Process parking citations
and prepare reports of enforcement activities.
- Monitor and document conditions that create a security or
safety hazard.
- Prepare preliminary and follow-up reports, take statements from
individuals, collect and process property and evidence following
standardized procedures.
- Maintain confidentiality of information and records pertaining
to investigations and college operations.
- Provide assistance and direction to university visitors,
students and employees.
- Follow written and oral directions given during the performance
of daily assignments
- Assist with special events and programs sponsored by the
University or other individuals and organizations.
- Assist in training newly hired Specialists.
- Attend/participate in in-service training and specialized
training programs.
- Conduct, or assist in conducting, specialized training programs
for the University community as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
The ideal candidate is customer service orientated with strong communication skills, and has experience working with young adults with a background that might include but is not limited to: education, community-based organizations, public service, or youth ministry. Candidates who do not already have familiarity with Pennsylvania state and federal laws and regulations will demonstrate the aptitude to learn laws and regulations applicable to the University; excellent verbal and written communication skills; must be service oriented and competent in interpersonal/human/intercultural relations; ability to interact with others in a professional manner and use sound judgement when resolving issues and assessing situations; demonstrate appreciation for diverse and cross-cultural communities; ability to respond to an emergency call-in situation; ability to demonstrate physical and psychological fitness; ability to satisfactorily complete a training program prescribed by the Department within a six-month probationary period; ability to use a variety of computer software programs including Microsoft Office products; computerized records management systems, and video surveillance equipment; ability to work differing shifts, or for a specific period of time, to meet University and/or Department needs; ability to work mandatory overtime is required; and ability to satisfactorily complete an annual in-service training program.
Education
High school diploma or equivalent is required.
Additional Requirements
This position requires a valid driver’s license and the ability to drive and qualify under the university’s insurance carrier when driving a university and/or leased vehicle.
Ability to obtain, in first 60 days of hire, and maintain certification in First Aid, CPR and AED operations is required .
Physical Demand
Campus Safety Specialists must be able to meet the physical demands of the position, including but not limited to: working in extreme weather conditions; ability to ride a bicycle, if assigned; remaining seated in a normal position, or remaining standing for long periods of time; ability to maintain balance while walking, standing, crouching or running; ability to reach up and out with hands and arms; ability to talk and hear and verbally express information or instructions; ability to use hands to grasp objects, type, pick up objects, move objects, or hold objects; ability to stoop, kneel, crouch and/or crawl; ability to climb stairs and/or ladders; ability to pick up, push, or pull up to 50 pounds and carry a distance of 10 feet.
Preferred Qualifications:
Education
Associate degree or bachelor’s degree preferred.
Experience
Experience working with a diverse population strongly preferred.
