Assistant/Associate Teaching Professor

About Northeastern:
Founded in 1898, Northeastern is a global research university and the recognized leader in experience-driven lifelong learning. Our world-renowned experiential approach empowers our students, faculty, alumni, and partners to create impact far beyond the confines of discipline, degree, and campus.

Our locations—in Boston; Charlotte, North Carolina; London; Portland, Maine; San Francisco; Seattle; Silicon Valley; Toronto; Vancouver; and the Massachusetts communities of Burlington and Nahant—are nodes in our growing global university system. Through this network, we expand opportunities for flexible, student-centered learning and collaborative, solutions-focused research.

Northeastern's comprehensive array of undergraduate and graduate programs— in a variety of on-campus and online formats—lead to degrees through the doctorate in nine colleges and schools. Among these, we offer more than 195 multi-discipline majors and degrees designed to prepare students for purposeful lives and careers.

The Department of Marine and Environmental Sciences is strongly interdisciplinary, and administers degrees in the College of Science at Northeastern University in the areas of Environmental and Sustainability Sciences (BS), Environmental Studies (BA), Ecology and Evolutionary Biology (BS), and Marine Biology (BS). Northeastern University occupies a vibrant 67-acre campus in the heart of Boston, surrounded by other leading educational, health care, technological, and research institutions, as well as world-renowned venues for art and music (see cos.northeastern.edu/mes). The Department of Marine and Environmental Sciences also operates the Nahant Campus, which serves as the location for the Coastal Sustainability Institute and the Marine Science Center.

About the Opportunity:
We invite applications from qualified candidates for two full-time, non-tenure track faculty positions who will be based on our Boston Campus. We seek broadly trained candidates with excellence in one of two areas:

The first candidate will have expertise in experimental design and research, statistical analysis, data management, and coding, and will teach lectures and labs in R-based Biostatistics and Introduction to Environmental, Social, and Biological Data, among others. Expertise in the application of these methods to genomic data is a strength. The candidate will also manage teaching assistants and tutors for these courses. The successful candidate is expected to teach the equivalent of two courses per semester, with the remaining workload allocated to managing laboratories for all computationally focused courses. There will also be opportunities for teaching summer courses for additional compensation if desired.

The second candidate will have expertise in areas such as GIS, natural resource management, sustainability sciences, environmental/land use planning, environmental water quality/restoration, remote sensing or related fields. They will contribute primarily to our Environmental and Sustainability Sciences and Environmental Studies programs by teaching courses in Introduction to Environmental and Sustainability Sciences, Solving Environmental Problems through Capstone, and courses aligned with the candidates area of expertise and the needs of our students. Candidates who can leverage their prior experience with government, industry or non-profit organizations to enhance experiential learning opportunities for students are strongly encouraged to apply. Given the diversity of our curriculum, we seek candidates that can offer both day and evening courses. The successful candidate will be expected to teach three courses per semester.

Responsibilities:
The Department Chair, Associate Chair, Graduate Program Director and/or Faculty Head of the program will work with the candidate to identify the best combination of courses to be taught for each position. Both positions have a workload equivalent to teaching three courses per semester; however candidates may be provided with course releases to facilitate additional service requirements to the department. Service requirements may be assigned at the discretion of the Chair of the Department of Marine and Environmental Sciences and may include but are not limited to teaching lab oversight and management, academic advising, program development, curriculum development, committee appointments, and personnel management.

Qualifications:
Applicants must have a Ph.D. in either 1) computational biology, ecological and evolutionary genomics, or related fields or in 2) the environmental/sustainability sciences or another closely related discipline by the appointment start date. Excellence in undergraduate and graduate teaching is required, as is excellent communication, collaboration, and leadership skills. Northeastern is committed to building a diverse faculty who are committed to teaching and working in a multicultural environment. Candidates must have a demonstrated commitment to working with diverse student populations and/or in a culturally diverse work and educational environment. Where appropriate, candidates are strongly encouraged to highlight prior experience working with members of underrepresented groups.

Salary Grade:
FAC
