Job Description:

The Associate/Assistant Vice President, Student Life is a visible and highly engaged Deputy Chief Student Life Officer to the Vice President for Student Life, regularly insuring co-curricular student learning and operational best practices through supervising and mentoring personnel responsible for the following operations within Student Life: Student Programs, Leadership & Orientation, Residence Life & Housing, Student Conduct and Community Standards, Commuter Life, Graduate Student Life and Spiritual Life. The AVP co-chairs the institutions cross divisional teams and committees such as the Student's of Concern, the Bias Response Team and coordinates the divisional Behavior Intervention Team.

Supervisory Administration

  • Provide direction, mentoring, evaluation, substantive practice as necessary and position on deployment to those areas of direct responsibility and additional areas assigned.
  • Manage the selection, employment, compensation, development and evaluation of staff. Make recommendations regarding personnel and intentionally encourage staff professional growth.
  • Strategic and Operational Planning, Development and Implementation.
  • Collaborate with the Vice President for Student Life and others as appropriate to the program and/or initiative, study, develop and present for adoption, both strategic and operational plans for continual improvement in efficacy of the division and its integral departments and services.
  • Conduct and coordinate intra and interdivisional research and assessment efforts, designing and implementing improvements through approaches to on and off-campus housing options, and commuter life, evolving the student handbook, addressing essential issues of our time and developing functional. Develop effective liaisons within and outside the University to ensure an effective, markedly proactive approach to Student Life.
  • Lead the division in developing student learning outcomes for division and departments, implementation of a curricular programming approach and related assessment plans.
  • Coordinate the development of divisional strategic and operational plans, in support of the Vice President. Contribute thought leadership, as requested, to institutional strategic planning and residence life master planning.
  • The selected candidate will have the opportunity to supervise other departments in the division within the first three years of service.

Co-curricular Program Delivery

  • Serve as an active and visible supporter of co-curricular life at the University. Engage in continual data and assessment driven recommendations for improvement, while directly managing the co-curricular experience through reporting departments and in a collaborative leadership role with other departments and divisions.
  • Support the Office of Student Life initiatives concerning the integration of the curricular and co-curricular experience of the University. Ensure programming is provided which enhances and promotes academic success, personal development and/or contributes to the quality of college life, such as cultural and contemporary programs, leadership development, spiritual life, alcohol and other drug education programs, and/or volunteer services.
  • Actively involved as a thought leader in student support, success, and retention efforts in support of the Center for Student Academic Success and Enrollment Management.

Requirements:

Doctoral degree in a discipline directly and functionally related to higher education and student life management, including higher education administration, counseling, social work, public administration or education.

A minimum of eight years, full-time supervisory experience in higher education, including professional practice in more than one area of Student Life.

Demonstrated commitment to and examples of immersing diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) approaches and learning outcomes into programs and services.

Demonstrated experience using data to make evidence-based decisions and recommend improvements in program policy.

Demonstrated knowledge of best practice in Student Conduct, Restorative Justice, Title IX and higher education compliance relative to student life.

At the University's discretion, the education and experience prerequisites may be excepted where the candidate can demonstrate, to the satisfaction of the University, an equivalent combination of education and experience specifically preparing the candidate for success in the position.
