Job Description

ASU School of Music, Dance and Theatre is seeking applicants for a Technical Director Sr. position to work with Production Management, the Faculty Technical Director and other Production staff to coordinate and ensure readiness of all scenic elements for productions within the School of Music, Dance and Theatre’s performance and rehearsal venues, as well as additional outdoor performance spaces. The Technical Director Sr. will manage inventories, maintain facilities and equipment, and purchase specific materials needed for production. The candidate chosen will assist with overseeing the work of students in scenic, property construction, paint, lighting, sound, media and stage management, and teach production classes.

Essential Duties

  • Mentors and supervises student's practical experience of standard theatrical construction methods and techniques. 
  • Assists in all School productions and performance events. Works with SoMDT Faculty and Staff to plan, coordinate and execute production build, load-in, and strike. 
  • Assists as needed with technical support for all events in the school’s venues. 
  • Provides additional oversight for practicum courses, working with students of all levels of experience. 
  • Teaches production classes as required. 
  • Serves as Safety Compliance Officer. 
  • Works with the Technical Director Sr. Props and Paint Supervisor to hire and manage a staff of student workers to facilitate school productions. 
  • Determines staffing needs and schedules crews for events. 
  • Oversees and maintains all scenic production-related equipment. 
  • Manages Scenic Production inventories and organization. 
  • Performs safety checks on equipment and facilities ensuring safety guidelines are being met. 
  • Oversees and maintains scenic production budgets and receipt tracking systems. 
  • Oversees and assists with purchasing technical supplies and capital equipment. 
  • Recommends purchase of new or replacement equipment. 
  • Attends production and departmental meetings.

Days and Schedule: Monday-Friday 8:00 AM-5:00 PM, to include working occasional evenings and weekends. Flexibility in schedule is required to meet the needs of productions and the school.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree with a major in Drama or related field AND three years of stage management and theater production experience; OR, Seven years of stage drama experience which includes three years of stage management and theater production experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience working as a Technical Director and/ or Scene Shop Supervisor
  • Knowledge of stage production practices and processes 
  • Experience managing the needs of multiple productions simultaneously
  • Demonstrated interest in innovative practices which broaden current notions of production for dance, theatre and other live events
  • Experience working within a higher education setting
  • Experience in working with students and faculty
  • Knowledge of supervisory practices and principles and ability to lead a crew of 10 or more students
  • Skill in leadership and project management 
  • Evidence of effective interpersonal and communication skills 
  • Ability to work collaboratively
  • Skill with standard theatrical construction methods and techniques 
  • Skill with welding practices and techniques, woodworking practices and techniques 
  • Experience with CNC Router equipment, Laser Cutters and 3D Printers
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Scenic Automation (Motors, Creative Conners control and Pneumatic systems)
  • Knowledge of truss and chain motors
  • Experience with additional computer drafting and rendering software including AutoCAD, Photoshop, Illustrator and/ or Vectorworks
  • Experience as an electrician for 120v, 208v single-phase and three-phase systems.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of OSHA Laws and Regulations
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Life Safety Codes
  • Evidence of a valid Driver's License

Working Environment

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling; some climbing and balancing; significant stooping, kneeling, crouching and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires 5% sitting, 45% walking and 50% standing. The job is performed under minimal temperature variations and in a generally hazard-free environment, but there is exposure to moving mechanical parts and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to the risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 70 pounds. The employee must be comfortable working at heights above 70'. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision and depth perception.
