Job Description
ASU School of Music, Dance and Theatre (SoMDT) is seeking applications for a staff position focused on managing our props and paint shops. The Technical Director Sr. Props and Paint Supervisor will work with Production Management, the Faculty Technical Director and other production staff to coordinate and ensure the readiness of props and scenic elements for productions within the School of Music, Dance and Theatre’s performance and rehearsal venues, as well as additional outdoor performance spaces. The Technical Director Sr. Props and Paint Supervisor will manage inventories, maintain facilities and equipment, and purchase specific materials needed for production. The candidate chosen will assist with overseeing the work of students in scenic, property construction, paint, lighting, sound, media and stage management, and teach production classes.

02Essential Duties
- Mentors and supervises student's practical experience of properties and scenic art.
- Assists on all School productions and performance events.
- Works with SoMDT Faculty and Staff to plan, coordinate and execute production build, load-in, and strike.
- Assists as needed with technical support for all events in the school’s venues.
- Provides additional oversight for practicum courses, working with students of all levels of experience.
- Teaches production classes as required.
- Ensures appropriate standards and safety procedures are followed.
- Works with the staff Technical Director Sr. to hire and manage a staff of student workers to facilitate school productions.
- Assists in oversight and maintenance of all scenic production-related equipment.
- Provides support to ASU students and faculty checking stock props in and out for projects.
- Manages Properties inventories and organization.
- Manages Scenic Art supply inventories and organization.
- Oversees and maintains props and paint production budgets and receipt tracking systems.
- Oversees and assists with purchasing technical supplies and capital equipment.
- Recommends purchase of new or replacement equipment.
- Attends production and departmental meetings.
Days and Schedule: Monday-Friday 8:00 AM-5:00 PM, to include working occasional evenings and weekends. Flexibility in schedule is required to meet the needs of productions and the school.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree with a major in Drama or related field AND three years of stage management and theater production experience; OR, Seven years of stage drama experience which includes three years of stage management and theater production experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

- Skill with standard theatrical construction methods and techniques
- Experience with acquiring prop elements for production through borrowing, building, or buying
- Experience with scenic art methods and techniques including paint mixing, the creation of paint samples and execution of scenic treatments.
- Experience with advanced scenic art techniques including faux finishes, carving, texturing and full stage backdrops.
- Experience in casting and mold making
- Knowledge of computer drafting and rendering software including Photoshop, Illustrator, AutoCAD and/ or Vectorworks
- Experience with standard theatrical construction methods
- Experience with welding practices
- Experience with woodworking techniques
- Experience with CNC Router equipment, Laser Cutters and 3D Printers
- Demonstrated knowledge of OSHA Laws and Regulations
- Demonstrated knowledge of Life Safety Codes
- Evidence of a valid Driver's License
Working Environment
The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling; some climbing and balancing; significant stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires 5% sitting, 45% walking and 50% standing. The job is performed under minimal temperature variations and in a generally hazard-free environment, but there is exposure to moving mechanical parts and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to the risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 70 pounds. The employee must be comfortable working at heights above 70'. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision and depth perception.
