The Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care at Johns Hopkins seeks a full-timeResearch Technologist and this position is available immediately in the laboratory of Jennifer K. Lee, MD and Lee J. Martin, PhD (https://anesthesiology.hopkinsmedicine.org/research-home/research-programs/pediatric-neuroscience-research-lab/).

Our laboratory uses a preclinical animal model and cell culture to study brain injury mechanisms and potential treatments for newborn babies that suffer low oxygen supply at birth (hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy). Our NIH-supported research focuses on the cellular and molecular mechanisms of neurodegeneration and pharmacologic/genetic therapeutics to reduce the risk of cell death and permanent brain injury that causes neurological and cognitive disorders.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

The Technologist will conduct cell and molecular biology work. The responsibilities will include:

  • Neural cell culture
  • Cell transfection (viral and plasmid)
  • Biochemical assays (spectrophotometric, fluorogenic, luminescence),
  • Protein chemistry (western blotting, chemical crosslinking, and immunoprecipitation)
  • DNA/chromatin damage assays (TUNEL, comet, and gel electrophoresis),
  • Histology
  • Immunohistochemistry
  • A familiarity with brightfield, epifluorescence, and confocal microscopy is desirable.
  • Other duties will include preparing brain fixatives and assisting with piglet animal perfusions.

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry or related field. Some related post-undergraduate work experience preferred.
  • Good oral communication skills in English and a collaborative and cooperative team spirit are required.
  • High priority candidates need to have, at a minimum, experience with animal surgery, cell culture, and neuropathology, including microscopy (conventional and confocal) and cell counting skills.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
