Job Description

EdPlus at ASU is currently seeking a Research Data Scientist to collaborate with a small, interdisciplinary research team and lead projects for continuous improvement in online, hybrid, and emerging modes of teaching and learning in higher education, specifically in the life sciences. Research is action oriented, supporting and coordinating with major stakeholders to improve student learning, motivation, and persistence and increase equity within life sciences curricula. Experience in participatory, action-oriented, and applied research is desired, including action research, design research, and similar research practices. Will work within EdPlus Action Lab and School of Life Sciences to conduct and oversee experimental, quasi-experimental, and post-hoc research and analytics that inform evidence-based instructional practices, pedagogy, engagement, technology in life sciences curricula. Lead research investigations to enhance tactical and strategic decision making, improve instruction, ensure quality courses, promote student success, and increase equity in representation and achievement for a wide variety of diverse populations. The candidate will bring strong and diverse data, analytic, modeling, and research design skills and knowledge of research applications in life sciences.

Essential Duties

  • Coordinates research and data activities between EdPlus Action Lab and School of Life Sciences.
  • Designs, implements, tests, deploys and maintains innovative data and education learning solutions to improve instructional operations in life sciences.
  • Collaborates and works with multiple stakeholders and groups across the University to conduct and oversee experimental, quasi-experimental, and post-hoc research/analytics to inform evidence-based instructional practices, pedagogy, engagement, technology in life sciences curricula. 
  • Leads research investigations to enhance tactical and strategic decision making, improve instruction, ensure quality courses, promote student success, and increase equity in representation and achievement for a wide variety of diverse populations.
  • Selects, develops, and/or recommends appropriate research design methodologies, data analyses, and statistical procedures; determine appropriate methodology to be used for particular project(s).
  • Communicates with internal and external constituencies to obtain necessary information
  • Serves as primary liaison on projects.
  • Coordinates and determines compatibility of data from various sources (e.g. internal ASU data tables, external datasets).
  • Manages data collection and compilation; analyze and interpret quantitative data; collaborate on qualitative and mixed-method data.
  • Writes technical reports, presentations, and articles for publication.
  • Utilizes various computer programs and software to perform data computation, statistical analysis, etc. (ability to read and program in R is required; flexibility to work in other languages and environments including Python, Julia, SQL, and Alteryx is desirable)
  • Prepares and presents research findings to various audiences on assessment results.
  • Facilitates workshops on topics such as outcomes assessment, program review, and departmental self-study.
  • Serves on internal committees and ad-hoc workgroups; attend meetings with departments, external reviewers, etc.
  • May create and maintain program budgets; monitor expenditures ensuring adherence to program objectives.
  • May supervise, monitor, or coordinate the activities of subordinates.
  • Seeks, evaluates, and assist in implementing new and emerging technologies that have potential value for online teaching and learning.
  • Directly interfaces with unit leadership, faculty, staff, researchers and/or administrators across the university regarding ongoing operations, applications, and existing courses, the selection of appropriate media, delivery systems, and planning for new course development.
  • Conducts and assists with the development of long- and short-range goals that influence tactical and strategic decision making, improve instruction, ensure quality courses, and promote student success in life sciences curricula and programs.
  • Develops objectives and activities based on department goals.
  • Participates in strategic planning and formulation of the department's course development and delivery plans and policies.
  • May performs other duties as assigned or directed.

 

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a related field AND three years of experience in research, information analysis or program evaluation; OR, Master's degree in a related field AND one year of experience in research, information analysis or program evaluation; OR, Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

 

Desired Qualifications

  • Evidence of quantitative and data skills
  • Experience in programming, data management, descriptive and inferential statistical analysis, and modeling in R, MATLAB, Python or similar
  • Experience in biological sciences research is highly desirable
  • Evidence of familiarity and experience with SQL or ability to learn
  • Evidence of broad experience/interests in a variety of statistical and machine learning techniques, ability and interest in developing skills to match needs in these areas
  • Experience and interest in data visualization, esp. dynamic visualizations and dashboards
  • Evidence of effective communication and collaboration skills
  • Experience in higher education research and practice; learning science experience preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to assist collaboratively in research projects of other EdPlus Action Lab researchers and to lead research and development projects with internal and external clients and collaborators
  • Evidence of a PhD preferred, preferably in education sciences, data sciences, or related discipline; will consider outstanding MA level or ABD; strong preference for some degree training in life sciences

 

Working Environment

EdPlus at ASU is located at SkySong, the ASU Scottsdale Innovation Center. The center houses a diverse business community that links technology, research, education and entrepreneurship to position ASU and Greater Phoenix as global leaders in the knowledge economy.

 

Activities are primarily performed in a regular, climate controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting or standing. Daily use of desktop or laptop computer is required. Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential duties. Regular review of completed tasks.
