Position Title ESL/Academic Skills Specialist Overview

In conjunction with the Assistant Director for Student Retention, deliver individual and group academic support aimed at promoting the development, success, and retention of all students, but specifically those who are identified as ESL, first generation, and at-risk or underprepared by virtue of their incoming credentials or academic performance.

Essential Duties:

1. Provide direct support in reading, writing, and oral communications support to ESL learners, and coordinate group academic support for ESL students in the Development of Western Civilization. Work with the Assistant Dean/Director of International Student Success to develop academic and cultural programming for international students. Contribute to International Student Orientation and other programs that include ESL learners. Work with office colleagues to design and implement support plans for international student-athletes as necessary. Monitor the academic progress of ESL students, and make appropriate referrals (e.g., tutoring).

2. Work with supervisor and other campus colleagues to develop intervention plans for at-risk students, including probationary students, first-generation students, and referrals from faculty/staff. Provide ongoing, individualized academic mentoring and study skills training to at-risk students. Monitor the academic progress of designated students (e.g., emails to faculty, grade reports, etc.), and communicate students’ progress to faculty and administrative colleagues as necessary and appropriate.

3. Design and delivery of academic skill workshops (e.g., time management, note taking, critical reading, etc.) for the general student population each semester. Deliver custom-made workshops that support faculty learning objectives, as well as student programs (e.g., Transitions), organizations (e.g., Student Congress) and events (e.g., Night in Friartown). Develop online academic skill resources, including those offered on the website (e.g., instructional videos, tip sheets) and social media (e.g., Facebook, Twitter), and create and disseminate academic skill resources (e.g., pamphlets, posters, tip sheets) to members of the campus community.

4. Design and deliver workshops that focus on best practices in teaching and assessing the performance of ESL students. Provide one-on-one and small group consultations for faculty who seek to make their teaching practices more inclusive. Design and facilitate ESL training sessions for undergraduate peer tutors. Develop and disseminate resources (e.g., suggestions for evaluating non-native English speakers, recommendations to address common challenges among ELS writers, etc.) that will enhance teaching and academic support programs.

5. In conjunction with the Assistant Director of Student Success and Retention, the Assistant Dean/Director for Multicultural Student Success, and the Assistant Dean/Director for International Student Success, identify students who may benefit from ongoing, structured assistance. Collaborate with colleagues to design services and programs that address the specific needs of multicultural students. Work with the supervisor, the Writing Center, and the Tutoring Center to improve cultural competency among peer tutors.

6. Communicate regularly with campus personnel regarding the academic progress of designated students. Work with direct supervisor market OAS programs, services, and learning opportunities. Serve on applicable departmental and campus committees and task forces. Prepare reports, bulletins, and memoranda (e.g., annual summary of services provided). Prepare recommendations and evaluations for students, as requested. Assist in proctoring exams (e.g., for students with disabilities), as necessary.

Marginal Duties:

1. Perform all other duties as may be required.

Education and Experience Required

• Master’s Degree in TESOL /Applied Linguistics or a related field from an accredited institution.
• Minimum of three years’ experience at the postsecondary level with experience teaching or tutoring English as a Second Language, or an equivalent combination of education and experience required.
• Knowledge of best practices in teaching ESL
• Knowledge of study strategies and metacognitive techniques
• Knowledge of support for at-risk students and the ability to construct individualized intervention plans
• Ability to design and deliver workshops on a variety of academic topics
• Ability to assist others (e.g., faculty) in their efforts to maximize students’ academic performance
• Technical skills, including the ability to use computer software (e.g. campus systems, MS Office).
• Excellent interpersonal, organizational, listening, presentation, and academic mentoring skills.
