The Department of Surgical Sciences at the University of
Wisconsin, School of Veterinary Medicine is soliciting applications
for 2 full-time Teaching Professors in Large Animal Surgery. The
successful candidates will join the Large Animal Surgery Section,
which is comprised 3 full-time ACVS Diplomates (including 1 ACVSMR
double boarded surgeon), 3 residents/interns, and a dynamic group
of certified veterinary technicians.
The Large Animal Surgery is located within UW Veterinary Care which
includes state-of-the-art facilities with equipment such as
endoscopy, mechanical ventilation, dialysis, tomotherapy, digital
radiography, outpatient ultrasonography, computed tomography, MRI.
We provide 24/7 service to the Small, Large, and Exotic animal
sections and are affiliated with the Henry Vilas Zoo.
Qualifications: Candidates should be board certified with the
American College of Veterinary Surgeons, or board eligible having
completed an approved large animal surgery residency. Must be
licensed to practice Veterinary Medicine in the State of
Wisconsin
A successful candidate for the Teaching Professor Track (Assistant,
Associate, and Full Professor) position in Large Animal Surgery
will have primary responsibilities in clinical and didactic
teaching as well as providing clinical service in the Large Animal
Hospital at UW-Veterinary Care. Teaching is the major
responsibility of this position and individuals in the Teaching
Professor Track at UW-Madison are involved in independent
classroom, clinical and laboratory instruction as well as community
and educational outreach efforts specific to their academic or
clinical discipline.
In addition, instructional design and development or enhancement of
academic content through the use of instructional technology,
participating in curriculum development and other activities
related to teaching, dissemination of teaching methods and practice
of the clinical discipline of large animal surgery are
expected.
The successful candidate will be expected to provide up to 36 weeks
of clinical service per annum and the successful candidate is
expected to be either board certified by the American College of
Veterinary Surgeons or Board eligible at the time of appointment.
Excellence in mentoring of clinical skills by residents and interns
is expected. Involvement or mentoring in clinical research projects
conducted by residents is encouraged.
Clinical duties will include patient care, instruction and
supervision of veterinary students, residents and interns, and
consultation with referring veterinarians and clients, as well as
shared participation in emergency duty at the University of
Wisconsin-Madison Veterinary Care Large Animal Hospital, which has
an approximate caseload of 1,600 patients per year, comprised of
70-75% horses and 25-30% food animal (mainly dairy cattle with a
small number of other farm animal species).
