Job Summary

The University of Colorado Athletics Department encourages applications for a Structural Trades Supervisor! This position is responsible for supporting the University of Colorado Intercollegiate Athletic Department by providing total customer service for Intercollegiate Athletic Department staff, student-athletes, University community and the general public by leading all aspect of operation and maintenance of the Athletic Department facilities. This position will assist with special events and supervise and coordinate outside maintenance contractors.

This position is responsible for promoting the philosophy and objectives of the intercollegiate athletics program. This shall include adhering to the principles of the Athletic Department’s Mission Statement, Diversity and Inclusion Mission Statement, Core Values, Policies and Procedures, as well as the rules and regulations of the University, the Pac 12 Conference and the NCAA

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Repair, Reassemble and Install Equipment, Machinery, Plumbing, Carpentry:
  • Maintain various equipment and machinery. Maintain equipment by crafting and implementing the accurate preventative schedule for equipment, machinery and tools. this includes, but is not limited to, the maintenance of grounds equipment, such as push mowers, tractors and line stripers construction trade tools.

Manage the Operation and Maintenance of Multiple or Large Physical Facilities:
  • Repair to building systems. Perform repairs to various building system by assessing the problem, determining the accurate course of action and compiling the repair or requesting additional assistance, if requires. At times the position may need to drive a University vehicle. After interviewing a customer requesting work, diagnose the problem, develop a course of action, determine an appreciate schedule, complete the repair. An example of an application of this method would be in repair a leaking pipe. This position would interview the person noticing the leak, determine the source, seek custodial support, and make the repair as required, possibly rebuilding the system to avert future problems. The ability to complete this task would require significant knowledge of plumbing methods. Recommendations that include repairs or replacements could have significant budget impacts. This position will need to prioritize the renovation project and recommend a course of action to supervisors regarding major project and renovations.

Door Wall Repair:
  • Repair walls painting and patching. Repair doors and hardware. Assessing the damage and doing what's necessary to get back to safe working condition.

Renovations Building Systems:
  • Renovate building components and systems by assessing and interpreting the user's needs, determining the appropriate course of action and completing the project. An example would include the construction of a storage closet. This project would require journeyman level carpentry, painting and plastering skills matching the building components to existing construction i.e. framing the walls, using wood or metal studs, hanging gypsum board on the studs, installing a door frame and hanging door, installing a lockset as the application dictated and taping, finishing and painting the walls and door. This position would also construct furniture systems, requiring journey level knowledge in carpentry to complete this accurate size and shape, repair the plastic laminate top, preparing the surface, and finish the surface to match existing piece. Specific examples of decision making would include determining the viability of the project, determining the best methods, based on established carpentry technique, matching finishes to existing finishes, and completing the alteration on schedule.

Special Events:
  • Assist in coordination of special events by assessing the needs of a use and setting up, as well as operating, the events accordingly. An example would include the construction of a temporary entry gating system which allows for the queuing of fans and ticket taking at a football game but the needs of special events vary greatly in the scope and often require last minute alterations to allow an event to work. In performing this task, staff draws on their experience, as well as the experience of others, to formulate an effective solution to the problem of creating a functional and efficient gate entry system. Problems which could be encountered include availability of the necessary components, which could lead to unplanned design changes.

Outside Contractors:
  • Coordinate outside contractors and University maintenance personnel in performance of duties, ensuring quality workmanship and completion on schedule. A broad-based knowledge of construction techniques and methods is required to effectively accomplish this task Staff would be reasonable to work with a contractor to assess the condition of a building component, such as a room partition wall, and choose to make a repair, or replace portions of the wall. When assessing the damage to a partition wall, one would draw on their past experience, as well as consider life cycle and overall costs, before deciding which direction to take with repair.

What We Can Offer
  • The salary range is $50,000- $56,000.

What We Require
  • Four years of progressively responsible experience in the structural trades appropriate to the work assignment (including carpentry, electrical, painting, lockssmithing).
    • Substitution : Successful completion of a formalized apprenticeship program or higher level course work from an accredited, non-correspondence, vocational or trades school appropriate to the work assignment may substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis. At the agency’s discretion, demonstrated proficiency on position competencies may substitute for the required experience.


What You Will Need
  • Knowledge of carpentry, electrical, painting, plumbing, and lockssmithing trades.
  • Knowledge of a variety of tools and methods.
  • Ability to assess and determine if the job can be completed in house or with an outside contractor.
  • Skilled at multi-tasking and assessing which jobs take priority.


What We Would Like You To Have

  • Supervisory experience managing small projects and advising people to complete the project.
