Brief Description of Duties

The University of the District of Columbia David A. Clarke School of Law (UDC Law) invites applications for a full-time Legal Writing Instructor to teach various first-year and upper-level writing courses. The Legal Writing Program uses simulated problems to teach doctrine and skills in legal analysis, legal research, and oral and written communication. Instructors will generally teach two sections of a two-credit, first-year course. Each section will have about sixteen students. Periodically, there will be opportunities to teach an upper-level writing course.

Candidates must have excellent writing and analytical skills. Candidates must also have experience in law practice or a judicial clerkship. Teaching experience is preferred. Candidates should have the ability and desire to work collaboratively. A strong plus is additional experience or degrees in education. The initial appointment for a successful candidate is a three-year, twelve-month appointment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Teach the required legal writing courses to first and second-year law students;
  • Plan and develop legal writing and legal skills problems for these courses;
  • Provide individual writing instruction to students;
  • Grade and comment on legal writing and legal skills assignments;
  • Cooperate and assist with other programs involving oral and written communication skills, including moot court competitions and other experiential learning opportunities;
  • Coordinate activities of the Writing Hub and supervise student volunteers;
  • Coordinate the integration of legal writing across the curriculum;
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director of Legal Writing.


Minimum Job Requirements

  • An earned Juris Doctor degree from an ABA-approved law school;
  • Be a member in good standing of the Bar of the District of Columbia or another state; and
  • Have teaching experience or evidence of demonstrated potential for effective teaching.

This is a sponsored program appointment. The duration of this appointment is subject to grant fund availability.

Collective Bargaining Unit (Non-Union): This position is not in the collective bargaining unit.
