Conducts original research, and assists in others’, including planning, maintaining, or completing research programs and/or projects involved in the discovery of new knowledge, techniques, and concepts which
require advanced level scientific/research knowledge, skills, and abilities following relevant policies,
procedures, regulations, and laws.
Must be U.S. Citizen at time of hire
Able to obtain a U.S. Government Security Clearance
Essential Functions
Develops original project proposals, research designs, plans and protocols and assists in the development of complex project proposals, plans and protocols.
Designs and/or conducts complex experiments, investigations and/or studies related to programs and projects in pursuit of new knowledge, techniques and concepts.
Coordinates or assists with logistics of research to include equipment, materials, and labor needs.
Collects data/samples related to own research as well as others’ research and in complex cases.
Records, compiles, processes and analyzes data/samples.
Documents results and observations in writing as well as presenting results to others.
May prepare research results for publication or presentation at conferences to include performing literature reviews and writing results and discussions.
May serve as an instructor and/or supervisor to other researchers and students in area of expertise.
May provide consulting to third party organizations related to research activities.
May maintain projects and/or coordinate funding.

Disciplines include behavioral and or cognitive sciences, engineering, sensors, biomedical sciences, neuroscience, chemistry, biology (specializing in canids), animal sciences and other related fields.

Desired Qualifications
• Expertise in a discipline related to detection canine sciences including but not limited to: cognitive-behavioral sciences; sensation and perception; biomedical sciences; neuroscience; biology or animal science (preferably with specialization in canids) chemistry; engineering – physics or other related to sensor technologies.
• Experience performing detection canine science related research and development
• Experience working with and conducting detection testing, data management and analysis of specialized working dog performance.
• Knowledge and experience with breeding and development of performance animals, especially detection canines.
• Experience performing neuroscience research especially that involving the olfactory system
• Experience working with detection canine training and handling professionals and operational canine programs
• Scientific publications/presentations related to detection canine sciences
• Experience working on government funded defense and security related contracts
• Experience communicating with government contract technical representatives
• Experience in multi – transdisciplinary collaborative research activities
• Excellent communication and collaborative abilities especially in translating technical data to actionable guidance for non-scientist such as government program managers and the detection canine operational community (i.e., technology transfer).
• Ability to identify and pursue research and development funding opportunities.
