The Coordinator, Environmental, Health and Safety (EH&S) assures that Alfred University maintains compliance with all Local, State and Federal Environmental Safety regulations. Also, the Coordinator, EH&S serves as primary representative/liaison to a variety of external entities including NYS Office of the Fire Marshall, various suppliers, nonprofit, educational, government, and community entities in relations to fire/environmental health and safety. The Coordinator, EH&S leads various internal organizational teams that implement Alfred University’s EH&S polices and goals.

Responsibilities:
  • Implements the strategy for Health and Safety initiatives. Proactively address EH&S related issues by creating or updating polices to address same.
  • Facilitate Respirator Protection Program, Lab Safety, SDS Program and Annual Trainings. planning and coordination with routine and scheduled inspections and evaluations of University facilities and grounds
  • Ensures that all website updates are fully functional and code complaint
  • Develops, maintains and implements all Emergency Action Plans
  • Independently design and deliver—both in person and asynchronously—safety training programs to prevent injury or disease caused by non-compliant practices concerning fire, chemical, physical and biological agents.
  • Assists the Manager, EH&S in the direction of the activities of other EH&S staff including the coordination of building evacuation, etc.
  • Assist in preparing reports (e.g.: department annual reports, etc.). Maintain all required DEC, EPA DOL and PESH records.
  • Work with Alfred University’s Facility Directors to ensure that contractor personnel working on the property are in compliance with all policies NYS Fire code and safety requirement
  • Assist with maintaining the Site Preparedness and Emergency Plans & Procedures.
  • Accountable for researching and writing permit applications and be compliant in completing permit reporting requirements.
  • Review accidents and incidents which occur in the area of responsibility and conduct field audits, reporting and managing the corrective actions.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Science, Chemistry, Biology, Safety & Health, EH&S Management, or equivalent experience required.
  • Minimum of five years of experience within the Environmental, Health and Safety functions & NYS Fire Codes.
  • Preferred certifications including; RCRA Hazardous Waste Management/ Hazmat & Waste Ground Shipper (DOT) and HAZWOPER 24-Hour Course/ GHS Hazardous Communication.
  • Demonstrated abilities to both work collaboratively and to influence those with whom no formal hierarchical relationship exists.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with office automation/communication software and tools.
  • Detailed working knowledge of NYS Fire Codes, N.F.P.A., U.S.E.P.A., U.S.O.S.H.A., N.Y.S.D.E.C., AND N.Y.S.D.O.L rules and regulations.
  • Highly effective written and verbal communication skills that can be used with people of various backgrounds, experience, and education levels.
  • Demonstrated highly effective platform presentation skills and training delivery skills.
  • Demonstrated the ability to create EH&S training programs
Working hours are not confined to weekdays but, may on occasion include evenings and weekends. Required to provide 24-hour emergency support as needed. The Coordinator, EH&S serves as a member of the campus emergency response team. The appointee will be required to perform other job-related duties required by their supervisor.
