Position Function:

This is a 12-month, tenure track position consisting of a 100% Research appointment. The primary function of this position will be, as one of the core team members of the ESPL, to develop an aggressive engineering-based research program that is supported by externally competitive and other grants to enhance aquatic food processing yield, food product diversity, food safety and quality and to provide solutions to engineering problems encountered in the aquatic food industries.

Department Profile:

Coastal Research and Extension Center serves as Mississippi State University’s “southern exposure”. This position is located at the Experimental Seafood Processing Center (ESPL) of the Coastal Research and Extension Center in Biloxi, MS, and is administratively associated with CREC with an academic home in the Department of Agricultural and Biological Engineering (DABE).

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Duties will include the development of an internationally reputable aquatic food engineering program, particularly in food processing machinery improvement.
This position will be based in Pascagoula, MS. The successful candidate will interact cooperatively with other faculty at CREC and DABE and support the ESPL research program led by the Director of the ESPL.
The position will interact with the aquatic food and other relevant food processing industry, government and non-government funding agencies to obtain funding from federal, regional and state competitive grants and other sources to address specific problems encountered by clientele.
The position will present findings in relevant scientific meetings and publish peer-refereed journal articles to demonstrate competency and program efficiencies.
The position will obtain funding to employ graduate students or research associates.
The position will actively participate and provide leadership in the service activities of professional societies/organizations and in appropriate intramural committees.

Minimum Qualifications:

An earned Ph.D. in engineering, agricultural and biological engineering or food manufacture engineering. The engineering background must be able to be clearly substantiated by college transcripts containing fundamental engineering courses and appropriate engineering dissertation. In addition, acceptable candidates must have outstanding English verbal and written communication skills and have record of peer-reviewed publications. The successful candidates should enjoy working with machinery improvement and development, have a strong enthusiasm in aquatic food research and have a creative mind, and are willing to be a part of a collaborative multidisciplinary team to help build a strong aquatic food research center.

Preferred Qualifications:

Have experience in mechanical or electrical engineering. Food processing equipment making or repair. Demonstrated record of extramural funding and rich experience in work related to food machinery engineering is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

The individual should be self-motivated, fit well in a multidisciplinary team environment, and exhibit excellent oral and written communication skills. Can obtain research grants and publish in high-quality peer-reviewed literature to develop and maintain a strong research program.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

Ability to work indoors and outdoors in a range of weather conditions. Ability to obtain a valid MS state driver’s license.
