Job Description:

This position is based at ASU’s Tempe campus. Due to COVID-19, all advising staff (as of this posting date) are working remotely. When safe to do so, staff will return to working on campus.  Training for this position may occur remotely.

The W. P. Carey Leaders Academy in Undergraduate Programs is looking for an enthusiastic, service-oriented and engaged Academic Success Advisor who can provide advising services to a student community comprised of the top undergraduate business students. The Academic Success Advisor will join a team of professionals focused on the unique needs and wants of high achieving students in order to enhance their learning objectives and impact retention. This position is a key contributor to our Leaders Academy community, not only through advising, but also through participation in student events and programming. Leaders Academy advisors will be expected to participate in engagement activities, including, but not limited to, New Student Experience, Camp Carey, Fall Welcome, Convocation and facilitate WPC 101. This position will work collaboratively with the Undergraduate Programs Office, including Admissions, Student Engagement and Career Management and Employer Engagement, as well as Barrett, Honors College, in support of distinct opportunities that will provide an exceptional and relevant undergraduate experience.

Days and Schedule:  Monday – Friday 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM; work hours will also include some evenings and weekends.  The position will require some in-state travel.

Essential Duties

  • Advise Leaders Academy students, responding to their questions and concerns while working with them to ensure ongoing satisfaction with their program as well as successful progression towards degree completion. This includes current, prospective (high school and transfer), and transition (incoming or outgoing) students
  • Help students interpret University, college and program level academic policies and procedures
  • Provide 1:1 as well as group academic advising, interacting in-person, phone, Zoom, email and/or other technology, as well as participation in recruitment, retention, academic success support functions
  • Work closely with students to identify all academic options including, but not limited to: degrees, extracurricular activities, study abroad program(s), thesis projects, research, and internships, supports and provides counsel to students in selection of options best suited to student’s goals, interests, and skills
  • Proactively monitor student academic progress through a variety of reporting tools including eAdvisor, Salesforce, PeopleSoft and DARs. In addition to these tools, phone outreach will be used to relay academic options, course selection and registration
  • Actively present, participate in and in some cases coordinate student programming, such as Advising in Residential Communities, Faculty meetings, advising and skill development workshops, New Student Experience, Convocation and more
  • Act as college/department liaison to current and prospective students, faculty, staff, and external groups on issues related to academic success
  • Participate in recruitment/admissions, retention, career development, and student engagement activities, including teaching a student success course (WPC 101) and attending Camp Carey
  • Assist students and parents in crisis; making appropriate and timely referrals for nonacademic issues and/or concerns to applicable services including, but not limited to: Student Health, Counseling & Consultation, and Career Services
  • Collaborating with academic units and student services departments throughout the university to facilitate comprehensive student support
  • Preparing reports and advising materials related to W. P. Carey Leaders Academy
  • Identify new ways to engage high achieving students academically, professionally, and socially to foster a strong community of leaders

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree AND one (1) year or more previous experience in one or more of the following: advising, student recruitment/retention or related student services utilizing a proactive and innovative approach which results in demonstrated outcomes in retention, graduation, and academic planning; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience working with students in higher education/college level academic advising
  • Collaborative, positive outlook; flexibility
  • Evidence of effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated use of problem-solving skills, critical thinking, time management skills, adaptability and effective use of new technology, practices and policies
  • Experience in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with peers, faculty, students, administrators and others
  • Evidence of strong organizational skills while working in a fast-paced and service-focused environment; detail-oriented
  • Demonstrated knowledge of ASU academic structure and organization
  • Experience using: Student information computer systems (i.e., PeopleSoft, DARS, etc.)
  • Experience using: Microsoft Office Applications (i.e. Outlook, Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint); Salesforce

Working Environment

  • Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse; required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work

  • Ability to operate independently within a larger, collaborative team environment
  • Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential functions. Use office equipment including, but not limited to: computer workstation/laptop (keyboard, monitor, and mouse), printer, fax, calculator, copier, telephone and associated computer/technology peripherals
  • Ability to problem-solve and assess students' individual needs to provide accurate, detailed information regarding academic planning, retention, scholarship renewal and degree completion
  • Ability to rapidly learn, adapt and effectively utilize new technology, practices, policies and methods
  • Cognitive ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and verbally, to develop advisement materials in various formats (electronic, hard-copy, etc.), and to coordinate and present information to current and prospective students
  • Cognitive ability to provide complex evaluations/assessments of students/programs, including interpretation of policies, procedures, and requirements of various degree/certification programs within the school as they pertain to high achieving students
  • Travel - While based on the Tempe campus, individual must be willing to travel to multiple campus locations in the Phoenix metropolitan area (campus shuttle available)
  • Work extended hours, including evening and/or weekends, as needed
