The Opportunity

The Chief Technology Officer will lead the Alumni Association’s technical vision and provide strategic direction and day-to-day oversight of the Information Technology (IT) and Enterprise Data & Systems (EDS) departments. This includes providing leadership and relationship building between EDS, IT, and Association programmatic and other shared services departments. This also includes partnering and collaborating with the University, University Information Technology Services and University Advancement to understand and implement new technologies offered and supported by these entities. The CTO will develop and manage the development, architecture, and overall EDS/IT roadmap with input from and as a part of the core leadership team. The CTO will also optimize resources, improve customer service, and ultimately increase alumni ‘connectedness’ to the Association.

 Key Responsibilities

Leadership & Strategic Planning

  • _Direct and manage the Enterprise Data & Systems and Information Technology teams, aligning and allocating resources and skill development with Alumni Association priorities. Coach, mentor, supervise, support, and assess staff to ensure a common direction that addresses current and future needs.
  • _Work within Association and University IT Governance structure to set the vision for how the Association will use technology.
  • _Provide leadership for alignment of Association and University technologies with business objectives that will optimize customer service, maintain sustainable operations and attain Association goals.
  • _Provide strategic recommendations to Association business units and leadership ensuring that technological resources meet the short and long-term needs of the association.
  • _Make executive decisions on behalf of the association’s technological requirements.
  • _Promote the evolution of data warehousing and business intelligence concepts that will allow for timely and efficient use of information from multiple sources for decision-making.
  • _Use data analytics to help programmatic departments track/report results and better understand the alumni base.

 Architecture & Support

  • _Partner with business units to determine system goals, objectives, options, and capabilities, and direct EDS staff to develop detailed requirements from the perspective of all users and stakeholders.
  • _Implement technology solutions and development tools that may improve the efficiency and effectiveness of all departments, and in a fashion that supports the Association’s KPIs, mission, and values.
  • _Implement information security standards/policies, including running audits and document security procedures.
  • _Review and manage training programs for users of supported application and software systems. Determine the level of training required and adapt training to the appropriate level.
  • _Make recommendations for product improvements, and any other innovations that could be beneficial within any/all departments and projects, based on technological research, explore new tools/technologies to improve development efficiency.
  • _Identify technology trends and evolving social behavior that may support or impede the success of the association. Evaluate and identify appropriate technology platforms for delivering the Association’s services.

 Collaboration & Consulting

  • _Act as primary liaison between Alumni Association, the University, University Advancement and other units/foundations to design, develop and implement systems that will be used by the Alumni Association ensuring that Alumni Association needs are met by the projects.
  • _Collaborate with technical staff in other University departments and/or external contractors to develop solutions that enhance operations. Represent the Association’s interests when working with third parties.
  • _Act as primary liaison for business unit management and as consultant for business requirement analysis to inform system and data decisions as needed. Develop and oversee processes for review of proposed project scope and requirements, vendor system proposals, and technical reviews for systems proposed by the business units.

While no single individual will possess all the desired experiences and qualifications, the successful candidate will possess many of the following attributes:

Professional Experience

▪ _Previous experience as a CTO or similar leadership role preferred.

▪ _A minimum of 10 years experience in the implementation of computer information systems for business applications is essential. Experience in higher education and/or business information systems in a University environment preferred.

▪ _Strong leadership skills and an ability to engender trust, respect, and credibility from others.

▪ _Strong interpersonal, team building, and communication skills; the ability to communicate effectively with people at varying levels of computer literacy; and the ability to establish collaborative working relationships at all levels.

▪ _Excellent customer service skills and a high degree of integrity relative to computer security and confidentiality of information required.

Education and Licensure

▪ _Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or similar (or equivalent experience). Graduate degree and/or certifications preferred.

  • _Enterprise-level business project experience with strong process analysis, design, and documentation skills.
  • _Familiarity with all relevant technological trends and technological infrastructures and be ready to deploy them within the association.

 This position supervises employees. Occasional lifting of computer-related equipment (approximately 40 pounds or less) is required.
