Lecturer, Dana School of Music - Director of Athletic Bands (Term)

Summary of Position:
The Dana School of Music seeks a dynamic Director of Athletic Bands for a full-time, non-tenure-track position as Lecturer in Music. The successful candidate will be expected to sustain and grow a thriving athletic band program that serves as an essential ambassador for the University in conjunction with YSU Athletics and at recruitment events and other University functions. Additional responsibilities will include classroom teaching in areas consistent with the candidate’s expertise.

Responsibilities: Administering and directing the Youngstown State University Athletic Band area, including the Marching Pride (marching band) and basketball pep band; leadership in drill design, marching fundamentals, logistics, planning, and implementation of the athletic bands throughout the academic year, including organization of pre-season band camp, managing band leadership and staff, and maintaining a budget (under supervision of the Director of the Dana School of Music); coordination with University Athletics programs; work closely with the Director of Bands on a unified vision and recruitment plan for the band program; teaching additional courses and/or ensembles reflective of the candidate’s strengths and needs of the Dana School of Music. Recruitment efforts will include developing and maintaining rapport with regional high school band directors, outreach to regional schools and musical organizations such as the Ohio and Pennsylvania Music Educators Associations, organizing recruitment events, hosting high-school bands on campus, and offering workshops for bands and educators. Plans, organizes, teaches, and provides feedback to promote and direct student success. Responds to students in a timely manner. Communicates with students, departments and university officials via university provided tools and resources.

Founded over 150 years ago, the Dana School of Music is one of the oldest institutions of its kind in the United States. The Dana School of Music is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music and offers a comprehensive listing of undergraduate Bachelor of Music degree programs as well as Bachelor of Arts options that provide additional breadth of study. Graduate students may earn a Master of Music degree in performance, music education, jazz, history and literature, and theory and composition.

Minimum Qualifications
At least an earned master’s degree in music. Demonstrated skill as a conductor, proven success in leadership of all facets of a comprehensive Athletic Band program at the secondary or university level. Demonstrated success with recruitment and related activities.

Preferred Qualifications
An earned doctoral degree in music. Demonstrated expertise in a secondary area such as music education, popular and/or commercial music, music technology, applied instrumental studies, jazz studies.
